Chapter 7 - The Arrest at the La Jolla Penthouse and the Collapse of Chloe's Empire

The ocean breeze outside the high-rise luxury penthouse in La Jolla smelled of salt and expensive jasmine, but the atmosphere inside was thick with sheer panic.

Chloe Sterling paced frantically across the imported Italian marble floor, her manicured fingers digging into her hair as she clutched a gold-plated smartphone to her ear.

"What do you mean my accounts are frozen?!" Chloe shrieked into the receiver, her voice rising to a frantic, hysterical pitch.

"Call my lawyer! Tell them I’m the daughter of Captain Richard Sterling! This is a mistake!"

The phone clicked dead with a sharp, electronic tone, leaving her staring at the blank screen in absolute disbelief.

Before she could dial another number, the heavy double doors of her penthouse exploded inward with a deafening crash as four heavily armed military police officers and federal agents breached the perimeter.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!" a sharp voice commanded, the laser sights of tactical rifles painting red dots across the designer furniture.

Chloe screamed, dropping her phone as she stumbled backward against a custom velvet sofa, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at the intruders.

"What is the meaning of this?! Do you know who I am?!" she shrieked, her voice cracking as she tried to summon the arrogant authority that had protected her for her entire life.

"You're under arrest, Chloe Sterling, for federal money laundering, conspiracy, and receiving stolen assets linked to classified military accounts," a federal investigator announced, stepping into the room with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand.

I stepped out from behind the line of agents, my boots clicking rhythmically against the marble floor as I adjusted the collar of my service jacket.

Chloe froze, her jaw dropping as she saw me standing there in the crisp, commanding uniform of a Navy Commander, holding the audit files she had thought were safely buried.

"Harper..." Chloe whispered, the color draining entirely from her face as the horrific realization of her situation set in.

"Harper, please! You can't do this! We're sisters! Tell them to stop!"

"Sisterhood ended five years ago when you helped father erase my existence," I said, my voice completely devoid of warmth or hesitation as I stopped a few feet away from her.

"And it definitely didn't survive you tearing my shirt off in front of a hundred officers to humiliate me on a public beach."

"I was just joking! It was just a social thing! Everyone hates you anyway—you're a freak with a ruined body!" Chloe snapped, her spoiled, venomous nature flaring up even in the face of federal arrest.

Without a word, I gestured to the agents, who immediately stepped forward and forced her hands behind her back, snapping the cold steel cuffs around her wrists with a sharp click.

"You can't treat me like this! My father will have your commission revoked!" she screamed, thrashing violently as they dragged her toward the double doors.

"Our father is currently sitting in a military holding cell answering questions about war crimes and embezzlement," I replied calmly, watching her with cold detachment.

"Your golden parachute has officially been canceled, Chloe. Welcome to reality."

As the agents hauled my kicking and screaming sister out of the penthouse, I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the glittering Pacific Ocean where the sun was beginning to set once again.

My phone buzzed in my pocket; it was an encrypted notification from Admiral Vance informing me that the final phase of the internal audit had flagged the mastermind behind the original betrayal in Somalia.

The trail didn't just stop with my father; it led directly to the desk of Vice Admiral Thomas Sterling—my father’s superior officer and the man who had personally signed off on abandoning my unit.
