Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Vice Admiral Thomas Sterling

The private conference room on the top floor of the Coronado Naval District Command Headquarters was shrouded in deep shadows, illuminated only by the faint glow of city lights reflecting off the bay.
I stood before a massive tactical whiteboard covered in pinned documents, financial audit trails, and classified operational maps dating back five years to the disaster of Operation Obsidian Veil.
The door clicked open, and Admiral Marcus Vance stepped inside, sliding a heavy manila folder across the polished conference table.
"The financial audit on your father’s accounts yielded the final missing link," Vance said quietly, his face tight with grim determination.
"Every single wire transfer from the Horn of Africa weapons cache wasn't just split between Richard and local contractors; it was systematically funneled upward through a master dummy corporation controlled by Vice Admiral Thomas Sterling."
The name hit the room like a cold draft.
Vice Admiral Thomas Sterling wasn't just any high-ranking officer; he was a legendary figure within the Pacific Fleet, a three-star general slated for promotion to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the political patron who had protected my father’s career for decades.
"Thomas," I murmured, staring at the photograph of the silver-haired, immaculate officer pinned to the board.
"He was the command authority who ordered the extraction chopper to turn back while my squad was still pinned down in the warehouse."
"And he’s the exact man who personally classified your casualty file as a desertion to cover up the illegal arms trade," Vance added, leaning against the edge of the table.
"He thinks he’s untouchable, Harper. His promotion ceremony to the Joint Chiefs is scheduled for tomorrow morning at the main naval amphitheater, with the Secretary of the Navy presiding."
I crossed my arms over my chest, letting a cold, calculated smile touch the corners of my lips.
"A promotion ceremony in front of the entire military leadership and the national press corps," I noted softly.
"That means the stage will be as big as it gets."
"Are you prepared to go to war against the highest levels of the Pentagon command structure?" Vance asked, looking directly into my eyes to test my resolve.
"They will try to court-martial you, strip your rank, and bury you so deep in a military prison that no one will ever hear your name again."
"Let them try," I answered without a single second of hesitation.
"They forgot that when you leave a soldier for dead in the desert, you don't kill them—you just train them how to survive the worst you have to offer."

"Good," Vance said, pulling a pristine, unsealed federal arrest warrant from his jacket and placing it squarely in the center of the table.
"The warrant is signed by the Secretary of the Navy himself, pending final presentation of physical evidence. Tomorrow morning, we crash the amphitheater."
