Chapter 10 - The Siege of Blackwood Estate

The deafening explosion echoed across the rolling hills of Westchester County, shaking the windowpanes of the grand mansion and sending a flock of startled birds exploding into the cloudless blue spring sky.

The heavy iron security gates of Blackwood Estate—reinforced to withstand a mortar strike—buckled under the force of a shaped charge, crashing violently onto the paved driveway in a cloud of dust and twisted metal.

Through the gaping breach roared three black unbranded transport trucks, their tires screaming against the asphalt as they fishtailed up the winding driveway toward the front portico.

Inside the grand study, Ethan Blackwood moved with the terrifying speed of a apex predator.

He unlocked his private wall safe, pulling out a customized Sig Sauer MPX submachine gun, slamming a thirty-round magazine into the housing with a crisp, mechanical clack.

“Elena,” Ethan ordered, turning toward her with absolute, unyielding authority.

“Go to the underground panic room beneath the east wing clinic. Lock the blast door behind you, and do not open it for anyone—not even Arthur—unless you hear our pre-arranged security passphrase.”

“No,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a tone that brooked zero argument.

“I’m not running and hiding anymore, Ethan. I survived six years in the shadows. I’m not leaving you to face an army alone.”

Ethan stared at her for a fraction of a second, seeing the exact same fierce, uncompromising spirit that had driven little Emma through a historic blizzard with a cleaning apron and a dream.

“Fine,” Ethan gritted his teeth, handing her a secondary sidearm—a compact Glock 19 with a fully loaded magazine.

“Stay behind me. If anyone gets past my line of fire, you do not hesitate. You pull the trigger.”

They sprinted out of the study into the grand foyer, where Arthur Vance and twelve tactical operatives were already positioning themselves behind the reinforced oak front doors and the massive marble pillars.

“Sir! They’re deploying smoke and flashbangs!” Arthur shouted over the rising din of breaking glass as heavy boots swarmed the front portico outside.

Bang! Crash!

A blinding flash of white light illuminated the grand foyer through the sidelight windows, followed immediately by the suffocating hiss of military-grade tactical smoke grenades rolling across the polished marble floor.

“Hold your fire until they breach!” Ethan bellowed, his voice cutting through the smoke like thunder.

The front doors didn't just open—they were blasted off their heavy brass hinges by a second explosive charge, sending splintered oak and iron hardware flying across the foyer.

Through the rolling billows of gray smoke stepped six heavily armed operatives wearing unbranded black tactical armor, their weapons raised as they swept the room with laser sights.

“Take them down!” Ethan roared.

The grand foyer erupted into a deafening symphony of automatic gunfire.

Arthur Vance and his men opened fire from behind the marble pillars, a relentless wall of lead that dropped the first three infiltrators before they could even squeeze their triggers.

The remaining three dove for cover behind the sweeping dual staircases, returning fire with suppressive bursts that chewed through the plaster walls and shattered the crystal chandelier overhead, sending glittering shards raining down like diamonds.

Ethan stepped out from the cover of the main hallway, his MPX spitting controlled, lethal bursts of fire that neutralized the cover of the staircase.

Two more operatives collapsed onto the marble floor, motionless.

The last remaining intruder—a scarred enforcer wearing the insignia of the New York Directorate on his tactical vest—dropped his weapon, raising his hands in sudden surrender as Ethan’s rifle barrel locked directly onto the center of his forehead.

“Don't shoot! Don't shoot!” the man gasped, blood trickling from a graze along his shoulder.

Ethan lowered his weapon by a fraction of an inch, his eyes burning with cold fury.

“Who sent you?” Ethan demanded, his voice echoing off the scorched walls of the foyer.

“The Directorate,” the man wheezed, coughing on the lingering smoke.

“They didn't send us to kill you, Blackwood... they sent us to deliver a message.”

“What message?”

The man smiled weakly, a drop of blood pooling at the corner of his mouth.

“The Directorate knows you harbor a federal witness. They know you’ve broken the syndicate code. They aren't going to fight you here... they’ve already seized your primary shipping hubs in Boston and Philadelphia. Your empire is bankrupt by sundown.”

Before Ethan could process the strategic horror of the man’s words, a sharp, piercing sound echoed from the secure comms unit clipped to Arthur Vance’s tactical vest.

“Vance! Vance, come in!”

Arthur tapped his headset urgently.

“Report!”

“This is the Boston shipping yard terminal!” a panicked voice shouted over heavy static and distant explosions.

“We’re under a coordinated attack! Federal marshals and unbranded strike teams are seizing every container, freezing our accounts, and locking down the docks under emergency national security warrants!”

Arthur’s face went chalk white.

He looked up at Ethan, the devastating truth crashing down upon them with absolute clarity.

It wasn't a hostile syndicate takeover.

It was a federal trap disguised as a cartel war.
