Chapter 8 - The Rebuilding of a Dynasty and the Promise Kept

The afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow across the private gardens of Blackwood Estate.

The snow had melted away from the manicured hedges and stone fountains, leaving behind the damp, earthy scent of winter turning slowly toward spring.

Ethan Blackwood walked along the stone pathway of the eastern courtyard, his hands tucked into the pockets of his dark trousers, watching a familiar scene unfold near the grand marble fountain.

Emma was crouched down on the grass, holding a small plastic watering can, carefully watering a patch of early spring tulips that Harold had planted along the border.

Standing a few feet away, leaning against the stone rim of the fountain with a cup of coffee in her hand, was Elena.

She watched her daughter with a soft, serene smile, the dark circles entirely gone from beneath her pale blue eyes, replaced by a radiant, healthy glow.

Ethan walked over, stopping quietly beside her.

“The board cleared out of Westchester thirty minutes ago,” Ethan said softly.

“Rossi caught a private flight back to Philadelphia, and Thorne is currently drafting his retirement papers.”

Elena turned her head, looking up at him with a gentle smile.

“You didn't have to let me come into that boardroom, Ethan,” she murmured, stirring her coffee with a silver spoon.

“I could have handled the directors myself.”

“I know you could have,” Ethan replied, his stormy gray eyes softening as he looked down at her.

“You’ve been handling things on your own for six years. But you don't have to anymore. That’s what I’m here for.”

Elena set her coffee cup down on the stone rim of the fountain.

She reached out, her fingers sliding into Ethan’s hand, lacing her fingers securely through his.

“You know, when Emma walked through your front gates carrying my resume in an oversized white apron,” Elena whispered, her voice thick with emotion, “I thought she was walking into a trap. I thought our lives were completely over.”

Ethan squeezed her hand tightly, pulling her slightly closer.

“She didn't walk into a trap, Elena,” Ethan said, his voice ringing with absolute truth.

“She walked into her home.”

Across the lawn, Emma suddenly looked up from her tulips, spotting them standing by the fountain.

Her face lit up with a brilliant, gap-toothed grin.

“Mommy! Mr. Blackwood! Come look! The first flower opened!” she cheered, waving her little watering can in the air.

Ethan and Elena exchanged a warm, lingering glance.
