Chapter 6 - The First Family Breakfast and the Shadow of the Syndicate Board

The morning sun washed over the grand dining hall of Blackwood Estate, turning the polished mahogany table into a mirror of amber light.
The storm of the previous night had vanished completely, leaving behind a crisp, cloudless winter sky that seemed to mock the violence and tension of the days before.
At the head of the table sat Ethan Blackwood, impeccably dressed in a dark charcoal suit, his dark eyes fixed not on the financial reports spread across his tablet, but on the small figure sitting to his right.
Emma Carter—now wearing a soft, cream-colored cashmere sweater that fit her properly instead of an oversized white cleaning apron—sat swinging her legs slightly while using a silver spoon to scoop scrambled eggs onto her plate.
“Is this the chef who made the chicken soup?” Emma asked, looking up at Ethan with wide, innocent blue eyes.
“It is,” Ethan replied, a faint, genuine smile breaking across his stern features.
“His name is Chef Louis. If there is anything else you want for breakfast—pancakes, waffles, fresh fruit—you only have to tell him.”
“Can I have chocolate milk?” she whispered conspiratorially.
Ethan chuckled, a rich, deep sound that made Harold, standing respectfully near the doorway, blink in sheer astonishment.
“Harold,” Ethan instructed without breaking eye contact with the little girl.
“Bring Miss Emma a glass of the organic chocolate milk from the private dairy inventory. Immediately.”
“Right away, sir,” Harold bowed, hiding a small, knowing smile as he hurried toward the kitchens.
Just then, the double doors of the dining hall swung open quietly.
Elena Carter stepped into the room.
She looked transformed from the fever-swept, shivering woman of the tenement.
Dressed in a simple yet elegant emerald-green silk blouse and black trousers provided by the estate’s personal shopper, her honey-brown hair was styled in soft, loose waves around her shoulders.
Though she was still a bit pale, her steps were steady, and her pale blue eyes carried a quiet, radiant strength.
Ethan stood up instantly, pulling out the chair directly to his right—next to Emma—with a smooth, chivalrous motion.
“Elena,” Ethan said softly, his voice dropping into that warm register reserved solely for her.
“You shouldn't be out of bed yet. Dr. Vance said you needed at least another forty-eight hours of strict rest.”
“I’m fine, Ethan,” Elena insisted gently, taking her seat and looking down at the lavish spread of food.
“I’ve spent six years sleeping on floors and eating cold canned beans. I think a morning in a dining hall won't kill me.”
Emma reached out, grabbing her mother’s hand and squeezing it tightly.
“Mommy, look! Mr. Blackwood said we can have chocolate milk! And we live in a castle now!”
Elena looked from her daughter up to Ethan, a lump forming in her throat as the weight of their new reality settled over her.
“It’s not a castle, Emma,” Elena murmured, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
“It’s just... home.”
“It’s a castle,” Ethan corrected firmly, pouring her a cup of freshly brewed coffee.
“And nobody is ever going to make you leave it again.”
Before the tender moment could linger, the heavy oak doors of the dining hall banged open once more—not with the quiet grace of a servant, but with the aggressive, uninvited shove of an outsider.
Arthur Vance strode into the room, his face pale and tight, holding an encrypted satellite phone in his hand.
Ethan’s expression hardened instantly, the warmth vanishing from his eyes as he stood up, placing himself physically between the intruders and Elena and Emma.
“Arthur,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register.
“You know better than to interrupt breakfast unless the estate is actively under siege.”
“We are under siege, sir—just not the kind you expect,” Arthur reported, stopping ten feet away, his eyes darting nervously toward Elena and the child before returning to Ethan.
“The federal marshals picked up Victor Vance at dawn, just like you ordered. But an hour ago, the New York Syndicate Board invoked emergency Article Nine.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
Article Nine.
The ancient, ironclad charter of the Eastern Seaboard Syndicate governing internal board disputes, hostile succession challenges, and emergency leadership reviews.
“What does the board want?” Ethan demanded, his voice slicing through the air like a cold blade.
“They want an immediate tribunal,” Arthur answered grimly.
May you like
“They claim that with Victor Vance arrested and your shipping contracts in a state of flux, the board must audit Blackwood Estate’s security assets to ensure our operations aren't compromised by... personal entanglements.”
Arthur’s eyes flickered significantly toward Elena.
