Chapter 12 - The Grand Entrance at the Metropolitan

The grand limestone plaza of the Metropolitan Museum was ablaze with the blinding flashes of two hundred media cameras.
Red velvet ropes held back thousands of spectators, paparazzi, and live-streaming influencers who had crowded the avenue since noon.
Tonight was the 75th Annual City Heritage Gala, the single most prestigious social gathering of the year.
Yet the atmosphere among the arriving elite was thick with frantic gossip and barely concealed panic.
The financial earthquake that had struck Thorne Capital at dawn had sent shockwaves through every corporate boardroom in the country.
Dozens of high-society figures who had associated with Grant Thorne were sweating beneath their designer tuxedos, terrified of being linked to the disgraced heir.
"Is it true that Marcus Thorne was stripped of his board seats by federal marshals?" a prominent banking heiress whispered behind her lace fan.
"It’s worse than that," her companion answered in a low, panicked undertone.
"Grant is in Central Booking without bail, and Andrew Sterling is personally overseeing the liquidation of their entire family trust."
"Nobody has seen Sterling all day."
"Rumors say he is attending tonight to deliver the final coup de grâce."
Suddenly, a low, synchronized rumble rolled down Fifth Avenue.
A motorcade of four identical matte-black armored Maybachs turned onto the plaza, flanked by four police motorcycle escorts with flashing red lights.
The crowd pushed against the barricades, media crews lifting their heavy broadcast lenses with frantic urgency.
The lead security detail deployed instantly, forming a human wall of broad-shouldered men in tactical tuxedos, led by Marcus Cole.
The door of the third Maybach opened.
Andrew Sterling stepped out onto the red carpet, towering over the photographers, his presence instantly commanding absolute silence from the press corps.
Instead of walking up the steps, Andrew turned, reached his hand back into the vehicle, and supported the woman stepping out beside him.
Emily stepped onto the carpet.
The emerald-green gown swept across the scarlet fabric like liquid fire, the diamond accents catching the flashbulbs in an explosion of white light.
A collective gasp ripped through the crowd of hundreds of onlookers.
The whispers stopped dead.
Every camera shutter clicked in wild, furious synchronization.
She was completely bareheaded.
Her scalp was bare, smooth, and gleaming under the halogen lights like carved alabaster, crowned by nothing more than the shimmering emerald drops swinging beside her jawline.
There was no wig, no veil, no scarf, and not a single shred of shame in her posture.
Her chin was held high, her spine straight, her eyes calm and unyielding as she looked directly into the sea of flashing lights.
"Who is she?!" a reporter screamed from the front press line.
"Mr. Sterling! Who is the woman on your arm?!"
Andrew stopped at the base of the grand limestone staircase.
He placed his hand firmly around Emily’s waist, pulling her flush against his side, turning both of them directly toward the mass of microphones and camera lenses.
"This is Emily Sterling," Andrew's deep, baritone voice projected across the silent plaza, cutting through the autumn air like a blade.
"My wife."
"The mistress of Sterling Global Holdings."
"And the only woman whose name will ever stand beside mine."
The plaza exploded into sheer, chaotic madness.
Journalists shouted questions over one another, flashes went off so rapidly they created a solid wall of white lightning, and live-streaming feeds across five continents saw their viewer counts surge past tens of millions.

Emily did not flinch under the barrage.
She took Andrew's arm, and together, they ascended the sweeping limestone steps of the Metropolitan Museum, walking not like guests, but like monarchs claiming a long-awaited throne.
