Chapter 2 - Wolves at the Velvet Table

The clock struck eight in the evening, and the restaurant was humming with the subdued chatter of wealthy patrons.

The entrance doors flew open with a loud, theatrical bang that shattered the restaurant's elegant ambiance.

A burst of raucous, drunken laughter echoed off the high ceilings as five young men strode into the foyer.

At the front walked Grant Thorne, wearing an open-collared designer silk shirt, an Italian blazer slung casually over one shoulder, and a watch encrusted with diamonds.

Behind him trailed his inner circle of spoiled sycophants, all sons of real estate moguls, hedge fund directors, and corrupt city officials.

They smelled strongly of expensive cologne, cigars, and pre-game bourbon.

Julian Vance practically sprinted toward them, his spine bending in an obsequious bow that was nauseating to watch.

"Mr. Thorne! What an absolute honor to welcome you back to Le Miroir," Vance gushed, his hands wringing together in nervous desperation.

"Your private corner table is prepared, overlooking the river terrace, exactly as you prefer."

Grant barely glanced at Vance, tossing his car keys directly into the manager's chest.

"Park the McLaren in the front circle, Vance," Grant ordered loudly, not caring that several older diners frowned in disgust.

"And don't scratch the rims this time, or I’ll buy this miserable building just to tear it down."

His friends erupted into howling laughter, clapping Grant on the back as they swaggered toward Table Twelve.

Grant dropped into the central leather banquette like a king claiming a conquered throne.

He propped his polished leather boots directly onto the opposite chair, signaling the waitstaff with an arrogant snap of his fingers.

Vance hurried over to Emily, his eyes wide with frantic, threatening urgency.

"Emily! Get over there immediately," Vance hissed into her ear.

"Bring their drink menus and don't make them wait half a second."

Emily closed her eyes for a fleeting instant, whispered a silent prayer for patience, and picked up the leather-bound wine lists.

She walked over to Table Twelve, her posture straight and her expression masked behind professional courtesy.

"Good evening, gentlemen," Emily said in a calm, clear voice.

"Welcome to Le Miroir. My name is Emily, and I will be taking care of you this evening."

Grant stopped mid-sentence, turning his bloodshot, mocking eyes toward her.

He scanned her from head to foot, his lips curling into a cruel, dismissive sneer.

"Look at this, boys," Grant announced to the table, pointing a manicured finger at her face.

"They sent us the most depressed-looking servant in the building."

The men around the table chuckled obediently.

"Tell me, Emily," Grant leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.

"Does your face always look like a funeral parlor, or are you just unhappy to serve men who actually have money?"

"I am very pleased to serve you, sir," Emily replied without missing a beat, keeping her tone completely neutral.

"May I start you with our private reserve champagne, or perhaps a vintage cocktail?"

"Bring us two bottles of the Armand de Brignac," Grant demanded, waving his hand as if swatting away a fly.

"And make it quick."

"And wipe that pathetic scowl off your face before you come back."

"You're ruining the aesthetic of my evening."

Emily bowed her head slightly, took down the order, and turned toward the bar without uttering a single complaint.

Claire stood near the service station, watching with a look of pure dread.

"He is already on a rampage," Claire whispered, handing Emily the chilled bucket and crystal flutes.

"Grant Thorne got dumped by his socialite fiancee yesterday, and his father threatened to cut his trust fund if he doesn't secure the Sterling merger."

"He’s looking for someone weak to bleed his anger out on."

"I just have to serve the wine and stay invisible," Emily replied quietly.

She carried the silver tray carefully back toward Table Twelve.

The heavy crystal ice bucket and the two gold bottles were balanced perfectly on her forearm.

As she approached the table, Grant was leaning back, laughing uproariously at a video playing on his phone.

Emily stepped forward, preparing to place the bucket onto the side stand.

"Pardon me, sir, your champagne," she announced softly.

Just as she reached out to set the tray down, Grant’s elbow whipped backward with violent, deliberate force.

The impact slammed directly into the stemware on the tray.

A large glass of deep red vintage wine that sat on the corner of the table overturned instantly.

A thick, dark stain exploded across the pristine white linen tablecloth, splattering across Grant’s tailored trouser leg.

The entire corner of the dining room fell dead silent.

"You clumsy, incompetent bitch!" Grant roared, leaping to his feet with dramatic fury.

His friends gasped in mock shock, instantly pulling out their smartphones to record the spectacle.

"Look what you did to my bespoke trousers!" Grant bellowed, towering over her.

"They cost more than your entire family makes in a year!"

Emily froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She knew with absolute certainty that he had intentionally thrown his elbow into the tray.

She saw the glint of wicked amusement dancing in the corners of his eyes.

"I am terribly sorry, sir," Emily said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to remain steady.

"I will clear this table and bring fresh linens immediately."

Julian Vance arrived in a panic, shoving Emily aside so violently that she nearly lost her footing on the slick marble.

"Mr. Thorne! Please forgive this unpardonable negligence!" Vance pleaded, pulling a silk handkerchief from his breast pocket to dab at Grant’s trousers.

"Emily is completely incompetent! I will have her disciplined immediately!"

"Don't touch me, Vance!" Grant snarled, slapping the manager’s hands away.

"I don't want your apologies."

"I want this clumsy peasant to clean up her own mess."

Grant pointed down at the red puddle spreading across the floor beneath his boots.

"Get on your knees, server," Grant commanded, his voice ringing across the silent restaurant.

"Clean it off the floor with your bare hands, or I walk out of here without paying a single dime, and I tell my father to cancel your restaurant's operating lease tomorrow morning."

Whispers of horror rippled through the neighboring tables, but nobody stood up.

Nobody dared to challenge the heir of Thorne Capital.

Emily stood frozen, looking toward Julian Vance for even the slightest shred of managerial protection.

Instead, Vance glared at her with pure venom.

"You heard Mr. Thorne, Emily," Vance ordered through clenched teeth.

"Get down on your knees and clean it up right now, or you are fired on the spot without a reference."

Emily thought of her mother lying in room 412, hooked up to life-support monitors and waiting for medication she could not survive without.

May you like

She closed her eyes as a single, burning tear rolled down her cheek.

Slowly, under the flashing cameras of five laughing trust-fund heirs, Emily knelt onto the cold marble floor.
