Chapter 7 - The Traitor’s Knees

Julian Vance remained huddled against the wine rack, his tailored suit soaked in nervous perspiration.

He had witnessed the phone call that destroyed one of the wealthiest commercial empires in the state in under two minutes.

He knew that compared to Grant Thorne, he was nothing more than an insect waiting to be crushed under a heavy boot.

As Andrew Sterling’s freezing gaze shifted from Grant Thorne to the corner of the bar, Vance’s heart nearly leaped out of his ribcage.

Vance scrambled to his feet, smoothing his disheveled blazer with shaking hands, attempting to summon whatever shreds of managerial authority he had left.

"Mr. Sterling... sir..." Vance began, his voice quivering with panic as he took a cautious step forward.

"I want to make it completely clear that I was in no way involved in this horrific act!"

"I was merely trying to maintain order in the dining room!"

"Mr. Thorne threatened to destroy the restaurant’s lease if I interfered!"

"I was protecting the business, sir!"

"I have given seven years of loyal, dedicated service to Le Miroir!"

"I was going to call the authorities the moment they left the premises, I swear to you!"

From behind the service station, Claire pushed open the swinging door, her eyes blazing with fierce, righteous anger.

"That is a complete and utter lie!" Claire yelled, stepping into the center of the room, pointing directly at Vance’s sweating face.

"Claire, shut your mouth!" Vance hissed, his eyes bulging with desperation.

"Do not speak out of turn in front of Mr. Sterling!"

"I will speak, Julian!" Claire shouted back, turning directly to Andrew.

"Mr. Sterling, when Grant Thorne began harassing Emily earlier tonight, Emily begged him for help."

"Instead of protecting her, Julian told her that if she didn't obey Mr. Thorne’s every whim, he would fire her without pay and blacklist her from the entire industry!"

"When Grant pulled out those clippers, I tried to run to the phone to call nine-one-one!"

"Julian grabbed me by my wrists, dragged me into the pantry, and locked the latch from the outside!"

"He took thirty thousand dollars in cash tips from Mr. Thorne to look the other way while they assaulted your wife!"

The silence that followed was so thick that the faint hum of the refrigeration units sounded like a roaring engine.

Julian Vance turned the color of chalk, his knees giving out entirely as he collapsed onto both knees on the cold marble floor.

"Claire is lying! She’s a disgruntled employee who was written up last month!" Vance shrieked, crawling toward Andrew on his hands and knees.

"Don't listen to her, Mr. Sterling!"

"I am a respectable professional!"

"I run the most prestigious dining room in the city!"

Andrew looked down at the sniveling manager with an expression of profound, unadulterated disgust.

"Julian Vance," Andrew said, his voice dropping into a register that rattled the crystal pendants on the chandeliers above.

"Who do you think owns the ground beneath your feet?"

Vance froze, his hands trembling against the floor.

"The... the Continental Hospitality Trust..." Vance stammered.

"And who owns Continental Hospitality Trust?" Andrew asked, stepping forward until the tip of his leather shoe rested inches from Vance’s fingers.

Vance’s eyes widened in realization, his jaw dropping open as the final piece of the puzzle fell into place.

"Sterling... Sterling Commercial Holdings..." Vance whimpered, the reality crashing down upon him like a tidal wave.

"This building is mine," Andrew stated with absolute finality.

"The operating license under which you serve food is mine."

"The guild certifications that allow you to manage luxury dining in this state are governed by boards on which my family holds the permanent chair."

"You traded my wife’s dignity for thirty pieces of silver and a fat tip from a trust-fund predator."

"You locked a terrified young woman in a pantry so you could watch an assault happen in your dining room with a smile on your face."

Andrew turned his head slightly toward Marcus Cole.

"Cole, call Commissioner Daniels at the Central Police Precinct."

"Inform him that I am holding five men for felony aggravated assault, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy."

"And inform him that Julian Vance is to be booked as an active accessory before the fact."

"I want Vance charged under the state statutes for harboring a criminal enterprise on commercial premises."

"No bail."

"No administrative release."

"Let him spend the weekend in the general population holding cells at Central Booking."

"No! Please! Mr. Sterling, I have a family! I have a mortgage!" Vance wailed, throwing his head against the marble floor in desperate prostration.

"I’ll resign right now! I’ll leave the city! Just don't put me in Central Booking!"

Two tactical guards stepped forward, hoisting Vance off the floor by his armpits as easily as lifting a sack of flour.

They dragged him toward the private office in the back, his frantic screams echoing down the marble hallway until the heavy door slammed shut.

Andrew then turned toward Claire, his cold expression softening into something resembling quiet respect.

Claire stood straight, though her hands trembled slightly at the sheer presence of the man standing before her.

"Claire," Andrew said, addressing her with quiet dignity.

"Yes, Mr. Sterling?" she whispered.

"You stood up for my wife when everyone else in this room was paralyzed by cowardice."

"You risked your livelihood to protect her."

"The Sterling family does not forget those who stand by us in the dark."

Andrew reached into his pocket and pulled out a solid silver calling card, handing it to her trembling fingers.

"Effective immediately, Julian Vance is terminated."

"You are appointed acting general manager of Le Miroir with triple his former salary."

"Tomorrow morning, a team of auditors will arrive to restructure the entire operational staff and wipe out Vance’s corrupt practices."

"Every server who stood by and laughed will be dismissed without severance."

"And for you, Claire, your family’s financial future is permanently under the protection of the Sterling Foundation."

Claire stared at the silver card in her hand, tears of shock and overwhelming gratitude spilling over her eyelashes.

"Thank you... thank you, Mr. Sterling... I only did what was right..." Claire choked out, bowing her head in profound respect.

Emily walked over to Claire, wrapping her arms around her friend’s shoulders in a tight, silent embrace.

"Thank you, Claire," Emily whispered into her ear.

"You kept me from breaking tonight."

"I’ll never forget it."

Claire hugged her back, gently mindful of the shaved scalp beneath Andrew’s coat.

"You are stronger than all of them, Emily," Claire whispered back with fierce conviction.

"Now go with your husband."

"Let him take care of you."
