Chapter 2 - Six Words That Froze the Blood of Every Billionaire in Chicago

“Take one more step toward my wife, Sloane, and this evening will become the last time anyone in this city ever opens a door for you.”

The voice was not loud. It did not carry any theatrical boom or desperate rage. It did not need to. It was spoken with the terrifying, absolute certainty of a man who commanded empires without ever needing to raise his voice.

Instantly, every single head in the massive ballroom whipped around toward the stairs.

Dominic Raines descended the grand staircase at a slow, deliberate pace. With one hand, he casually buttoned the front of his custom-tailored black dinner jacket. At forty-two years old, he carried himself with the quiet, devastating control of a man who had never once needed to repeat an order in his entire life.

Publicly, Dominic was known as the chairman and chief executive officer of Raines Capital, a sprawling private investment conglomerate with massive global interests in commercial construction, luxury hotels, international shipping, and cutting-edge technology infrastructure. He was a pillar of the legitimate financial world, a billionaire philanthropist whose donations built hospitals and funded universities.

But privately, away from the glittering society pages, people whispered a very different, much darker title.

Dominic had inherited the vast, terrifying Raines organization at the young age of twenty-four, following the brutal, unsolved murder of his father. For more than a decade afterward, his name had been inextricably linked to Chicago’s oldest and most ruthless criminal underworld—a shadow empire built through high-stakes gambling, lucrative smuggling routes, ironclad political corruption, and financial debts that no sensible person would ever dare leave unpaid.

In recent years, Dominic had systematically transformed his public image by shifting the vast majority of the organization into entirely legitimate businesses. He had aggressively closed illegal clubs, severed ties with dangerous criminal syndicates, and forced old-guard mobsters into early retirement.

Yet, old reputations survive much longer than empires do.

Everyone in the ballroom—every real estate titan, every corrupt politician, every timid socialite—knew precisely what Dominic Raines had once been capable of doing when crossed. They knew that the sleek, modern billionaire exterior was merely a well-tailored suit covering a predator who could dismantle their lives overnight.

As Dominic reached the bottom of the stairs, the massive crowd parted before him like water, terrified of being within arm's reach of his quiet fury.

Sloane instantly released the torn strip of silver silk from her grip, her face draining of all color.

Nolan Whitmore stumbled backward, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as his brain desperately tried to process the impossible words that had just been spoken.

My wife.

Sloane Harrington had just publicly assaulted, humiliated, and ripped the dress off the wife of Dominic Raines.

Dominic did not even glance at Sloane or Nolan. He walked straight past them as if they were nothing more than empty air, heading directly toward Clara.

Without a word, Dominic slipped his expensive black dinner jacket off his shoulders and gently draped it around Clara’s shivering form, carefully buttoning the front so that no one in the room could see the ugly, humiliating damage Sloane had inflicted upon her dress. Then, he reached out, placing two fingers gently beneath her chin to tilt her face upward.

“Are you hurt?” his voice dropped an octave, loaded with a terrifying tenderness.

“I’m just embarrassed,” Clara whispered, her cheeks flushing.

His jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

“That wasn’t what I asked you, Clara.”

“No. She didn’t physically hurt me.”

Gently, Dominic’s fingers traced the angry red friction marks on Clara’s bare shoulder where the rough silk had scraped against her delicate skin during the violent pull.

“She put her hands on you without your permission.”

“I’m completely all right, Dom.”

Dominic held her dark gaze for a long, piercing moment, silently reading her expression to ensure she wasn't hiding any pain. Only when Clara gave him a reassuring nod did he finally turn his attention away from her.

May you like

The instant Dominic pivoted to face Sloane Harrington, the temperature in the grand ballroom seemed to drop twenty degrees. The air grew thick, heavy, and suffocating.

“Explain,” Dominic said softly.
