Chapter 7 - The Quiet Strength Behind the Iron Throne

Back at the sprawling Raines estate in the exclusive Lincoln Park neighborhood, the atmosphere was a stark, peaceful contrast to the corporate chaos destroying Nolan and Sloane downtown.

Clara sat in the sunlit conservatory overlooking the manicured private gardens, sipping a cup of herbal tea while soft classical music played in the background. Despite the lingering shock of the public humiliation at the Ashford Grand Hotel, she felt a profound sense of closure. For years, she had chosen to keep a low profile, hiding her vast family wealth and her true identity behind volunteer work and modest clothes, simply wanting to be judged for who she was rather than what her bank account said.

She had wanted to avoid the superficiality of high society. But sometimes, monsters like Sloane Harrington forced good people to take a stand.

The heavy glass doors of the conservatory slid open, and heavy footsteps approached. Clara didn't need to turn around to know it was Dominic.

He walked up behind her, placing his hands gently on her shoulders, his thumbs softly massaging the lingering tension from her muscles.

“Are you still thinking about what happened?” Dominic asked softly, his voice losing all of its boardroom coldness, replaced by deep, abiding tenderness.

Clara leaned her head back against his chest, closing her eyes.

“Not about Sloane, Dom. I was thinking about how quickly people change their tune when power enters the room.”

Dominic kissed the top of her head, pulling her a little closer.

“People like Sloane only understand power and fear because they are too empty inside to understand anything else. They worship status because they have no character.”

“And what about you, Dominic Raines?” Clara turned her head, looking up into his piercing dark eyes with a playful, loving smirk. “Are you still a man of fear?”

Dominic let out a low, rumbling chuckle, wrapping his arms securely around her waist and pulling her up into his embrace.

“For you, cara? Never. For anyone who dares to cross you? Absolutely.”

Clara rested her hands against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart. She knew the darkness in his past—she had stood by him when he inherited the remnants of his father’s criminal empire, whispering courage into his ear when he chose to burn it all down and build a legitimate legacy instead. She was the only person on earth who had ever truly seen beneath the armor of the most feared man in Chicago, loving him not in spite of his dangerous reputation, but because she knew the gentle, protective soul he kept hidden from the world.

“Nolan Whitmore’s company is officially finished,” Dominic murmured into her hair. “The federal investigators seized their accounts an hour ago. And Sloane Harrington’s father has cut her off financially, packing her bags and shipping her off to a remote family estate in rural Montana where no one will ever have to listen to her arrogant voice again.”

Clara sighed softly, resting her chin against his chest.

“Good. Maybe humility will finally teach her what a silver spoon never could.”

“Now,” Dominic said, pulling back slightly with a warm, genuine smile that he reserved exclusively for her. “Forget about them. Tonight, we are having dinner at home, just the two of us. No galas, no cameras, no monsters.”

May you like

Clara smiled brightly, looping her arms around his neck.

“That sounds like the best luxury in the world.”
