Chapter 10 - The Courtroom Drama

The Milwaukee County Family Courtroom was cold, sterile, and smelling faintly of old paper and polished wood. Judge Evelyn Vance presided over the bench with an expression of unwavering sternness, reviewing the massive file submitted by both legal teams. Vanessa Bennett sat at the opposing table, flanked by an expensive defense attorney, wearing an elegant black wool coat and projecting an air of aggrieved martyrdom. Mark sat beside his legal counsel, calm, upright, and wearing a sharp charcoal suit provided courtesy of Hartwell Development’s executive wardrobe allowance. Emma was safely tucked away with Dana at the family shelter, spared the ugliness of the legal proceedings.

Vanessa’s attorney rose first, delivering a polished, emotionally manipulative opening statement. “Your Honor, my client has been devastated by the reckless interference of third parties in a fragile domestic ecosystem. Mr. Bennett is a chronically overworked employee who abandoned his marital home, leaving Mrs. Bennett to manage severe behavioral issues. We are asking for sole custody and financial restitution.”

Judge Vance didn’t look impressed. She turned her gaze to Mark’s attorney, who simply nodded and handed up three specific exhibits.

“Your Honor, we submit Exhibit A: certified employment records proving Mr. Bennett’s new executive position with Hartwell Development, providing a stable income, full benefits, and flexible daytime hours,” Mark’s lawyer stated clearly. “We submit Exhibit B: financial audits proving that Mrs. Bennett’s claims of household stability were funded entirely by fraudulent, unauthorized credit accounts. And finally, we submit Exhibit C.”

The attorney pressed a remote, projecting high-definition dashcam footage directly onto the courtroom’s main display screen. The video began to play with crystal-clear audio: Vanessa’s voice hissing “If you ruin Christmas, you can spend it outside like you deserve,” followed by the violent slam of the door and the shattering of the glass angel against the frozen concrete.

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery. Vanessa’s face drained of every trace of color, her mouth opening and closing silently as the damning audio echoed off the high courtroom walls. She stood up abruptly, pointing a shaking finger at the screen. “That’s out of context! That video was illegally obtained! It’s a setup!”

“Sit down, Mrs. Bennett,” Judge Vance commanded, her voice like cracking ice. The judge stared down at Vanessa with naked disgust. “I have reviewed the environmental temperature logs for that night. Eleven degrees. You deliberately locked an eight-year-old child out of her home without adequate clothing while you entertained guests. Your manipulation of this court is appalling.”

Judge Vance didn’t hesitate. With a single sharp rap of her gavel, she ruled immediately. “Sole legal and physical custody is granted permanently to Mark Bennett. Furthermore, a restraining order is issued prohibiting Vanessa Bennett from any contact with the minor child. Mrs. Bennett, you have forty-eight hours to vacate the West Allis property. Court is adjourned.”
