Chapter 3 - Uncovering the Truth

Morning broke over Milwaukee, casting a glaring, slate-gray light across frozen rooftops and slush-filled streets. Inside his penthouse office overlooking Lake Michigan, Adrian Hartwell stared at a glowing computer monitor, his coat still draped over the back of his leather chair. He had spent the remaining hours of the night reviewing corporate payroll and logistics manifests through Hartwell Development’s subsidiary holdings. It didn’t take long to find what he was looking for. Apex Logistics was a tier-three shipping hub contracted extensively by Hartwell Development. And Mark Bennett—Emma’s father—was listed as a senior inventory supervisor working sixty to eighty hours a week, locked into a grueling graveyard shift that paid a meager hourly wage while Vanessa enjoyed a lifestyle funded by predatory credit lines.

Adrian tapped his desk intercom, summoning his executive assistant, Marcus.

“Marcus, I need you to pull up the personnel file for Mark Bennett at Apex Logistics. I also want a complete financial audit of his household expenses, specifically targeting any credit accounts held by a Vanessa Bennett.”

“Right away, Mr. Hartwell,” Marcus replied, noting the unusual edge in his boss’s voice. “Is there an issue with the Apex contract?”

“No,” Adrian said quietly, his eyes fixed on a photograph of his own daughter’s empty bedroom on his phone—a room he hadn’t dared touch in a decade following a tragedy that had broken his marriage. “The contract is fine. But the human infrastructure is collapsing. I’m going down to the warehouse myself.”

Meanwhile, across town at the family shelter, Emma woke up wrapped in a heavy wool blanket on a cot in Dana’s private office. She was wearing clean, oversized sweatpants provided by the shelter, but her worn gray sweater remained draped over a chair nearby, guarded like a sacred relic. Dana sat across the room, reviewing intake forms and preparing for the legal storm that was undoubtedly about to break. Vanessa Bennett was not going to let her narrative slip away quietly; by mid-morning, the police would be involved, and the battle lines would be drawn. Adrian knew he had to reach Mark before Vanessa spun a web of lies so thick that the exhausted father would retreat back into denial out of sheer psychological self-preservation.
