Chapter 7 - Walking Away

The driveway of the West Allis colonial looked eerily quiet under the afternoon sun, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with narcissistic rage. Vanessa Bennett paced across the hardwood living room, her phone pressed to her ear as she argued furiously with a divorce attorney. When the crunch of gravel signaled Mark’s truck pulling up to the curb, she slammed the phone down and threw the front door open, ready to unleash a torrent of calculated abuse.

“Are you out of your mind?!” Vanessa shrieked as Mark walked up the steps, his face completely expressionless, flanked by two police officers acting as civil standby. “Going behind my back with some billionaire creep and police officers? Do you have any idea how this looks for my reputation in the neighborhood?”

Mark didn’t blink. He walked right past her into the house, his movements mechanical and cold. He didn’t shout; he didn’t argue. The man who had absorbed her endless criticism for three years was completely gone, replaced by a father executing a tactical extraction.

“Get out of my way, Vanessa,” Mark said quietly, his voice carrying a dangerous, chilling stillness.

“You can’t just walk in here!” she screamed, grabbing at his sleeve. “I raised that ungrateful brat! I put food on this table! If you walk out that door, I will sue you for every penny you’re worth, I’ll take the house, and you will never, ever see your daughter again!”

Mark turned slowly, looking down at the woman he had foolishly believed would love his child. “The house is mortgaged to your credit cards, Vanessa. I checked the financial audit this morning. Your designer bags, your luxury vacations, your continuous demands—it’s all backed by debt you accumulated behind my back while I worked eighty hours a week.” He reached past her and picked up a heavy duffel bag packed with Emma’s clothes and schoolbooks. “We’re done. Serve me whatever papers you want. My lawyer will handle the rest.”

Madison and Tyler peered warily from the top of the stairs, watching their mother’s empire crumble in real time. Vanessa’s face twisted into an ugly mask of pure venom as she realized her control had evaporated entirely.

“You’ll regret this, Mark! You’re nothing without me!” she screamed as he turned his back on her for the final time, walking down the steps without looking back.
