Chapter 10 - An Unspoken Pact

The atmosphere inside the grand foyer was suffocatingly tense as the heavy double front doors opened with a low groan.
Two armed guards escorted Carter Vance into the cavernous hall, their hands resting firmly on the holsters of their weapons.
Carter stepped onto the polished marble, his cheap leather boots squeaking against the pristine surface as he looked around at the towering crystal chandeliers.
His eyes were wide with naked greed as he took in the unimaginable wealth surrounding him.
At the center of the foyer sat Dominic Mason in his leather wheelchair, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that projected absolute authority.
Standing directly to his right, her back straight and her expression carved out of defiant ice, was Megan Foster.
Carter’s eyes locked onto Megan, and an ugly, mocking sneer spread across his unshaven face.
“Well, look at you, Meg,” Carter sneered, taking a step forward before the guards blocked his path with crossed arms.
“From sleeping on a fold-out couch in Decatur to playing high-class maid for Atlanta’s cripple king,” Carter laughed, his tone dripping with venom.
Megan didn’t flinch, though her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides.
“Watch your tongue in this house, Carter,” Megan warned, her voice steady and lethal.
“I have a signed custody petition right here in my hand, sweetheart,” Carter said, waving the manila envelope aggressively.
“A court magistrate signed off on an emergency welfare hearing because you brought my biological son into a fortified crime compound,” Carter claimed smugly.
“You don’t give a damn about Leo,” Megan retorted, her eyes burning with pure disgust. “You only care about the five thousand dollars you owe to loan sharks.”
“Vincent Gallo was kind enough to settle that little gambling debt for me this morning,” Carter admitted with a triumphant grin.
“All Gallo wanted in return was for me to establish legal paternity and demand temporary custody of Leo,” Carter revealed carelessly.
“And once I have custody, Gallo gets unlimited leverage over Mr. Mason’s real estate holdings,” Carter added, looking directly at Dominic.
Dominic remained perfectly motionless, his hands resting calmly on the armrests of his wheelchair as he studied the pathetic creature before him.
“Are you finished speaking, Mr. Vance?” Dominic asked, his baritone voice sending a chill through the warm foyer.
“What are you going to do about it, Mason?” Carter challenged, taking a swaggering step closer. “Call your lawyers? By the time your lawyers file an injunction, the police will be here with a court order to remove the boy.”
Dominic subtly gestured toward Marcus, who stood near the archway holding a slim leather tablet.
“Carter Vance, thirty-six years old,” Dominic began reading from memory, his voice devoid of emotion.
“In 2023, you embezzled eighty-four thousand dollars from the Fulton County school district’s athletic maintenance fund,” Dominic stated flatly.
Carter’s smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden flash of panic in his bloodshot eyes.
“You covered the deficit by transferring ownership of your late mother’s suburban property into an offshore shell company,” Dominic continued.
“That shell company, unfortunately for you, was owned by a secondary subsidiary of Mason Holdings,” Dominic revealed, leaning forward.
“In plain English, Carter: I own the title to your mother’s house, I own your outstanding tax liens, and I have the unredacted bank records proving grand larceny in three separate jurisdictions,” Dominic said with chilling precision.
Carter’s mouth opened and closed like a fish suffocating on dry land, his skin turning a sickly shade of gray.
“If you take one more step toward Megan or her child, those files will be sitting on the Fulton County District Attorney’s desk before your car reaches the highway,” Dominic warned.
“You will spend the next twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary where Vincent Gallo cannot protect you from the men who owe me favors,” Dominic added, his words carrying the weight of an inescapable tombstone.
Carter began to tremble, clutching the useless custody envelope against his chest as the reality of his total destruction sank in.
“Drop the custody petition on the floor, Carter,” Megan commanded, stepping forward with unwavering strength.
Carter looked at Megan, then looked at the cold, murderous gaze of Dominic Mason, and realized he had lost completely.
His fingers loosened, and the manila envelope fell limply onto the marble floor with a soft slap.
“Get out of my house,” Dominic said quietly.
The two security guards grabbed Carter by his jacket collar, hauling him backward toward the heavy entrance doors and throwing him out into the cold afternoon drizzle.
Megan watched the heavy doors slam shut, a long, shuddering breath escaping her chest as two years of suffocating terror finally evaporated into thin air.
She turned to look down at Dominic, her eyes brimming with a mixture of overwhelming relief and deep, unspoken gratitude.
“Thank you,” Megan whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion.
Dominic looked up at her, his face softening as he saw the profound relief shining in her tear-streaked eyes.
“You don’t have to thank me, Megan,” Dominic replied softly. “Nobody threatens the people under my roof.”
At that moment, the door to the west wing creaked open, and little Leo came toddling into the foyer, clutching a small red toy fire engine in his chubby hands.
The toddler ran across the marble floor, completely unaware of the life-and-death drama that had just unfolded.
He stopped right beside Dominic’s wheelchair, looked up at the intimidating billionaire with wide, curious eyes, and offered the toy fire engine toward Dominic’s lap.
“Vroom,” Leo said cheerfully, smiling with all six of his baby teeth.
Megan held her breath, terrified that Dominic would reject the child’s messy, innocent gesture.
Instead, Dominic Mason—the ruthless titan of Atlanta’s underground—slowly reached down with his large, scarred hand and gently took the small toy car.
“Vroom,” Dominic repeated softly, rolling the little red wheels across the armrest of his wheelchair with a tender smile that lit up his entire face.
Megan covered her heart with her hand, feeling a warm, unstoppable tear slide down her cheek as she watched the cold fortress around Dominic’s soul crumble into dust.

Dominic looked up from the toy, his dark eyes meeting Megan’s with an unspoken pact passing between their souls.
He knew that Vincent Gallo would retaliate with everything he had, and that the coming days would bring blood, fire, and open warfare to Atlanta.
