Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Gates and the First Threat

The formal dining room of the Buckhead estate was a cathedral of dark mahogany and polished silver, illuminated by crystal chandeliers that cast a warm, elegant glow over the long banquet table.

Megan stood near the doorway holding little Leo’s hand, feeling entirely out of place in her faded denim jeans and worn sneakers as she looked at the spread of fresh fruit, pastries, and warm oatmeal set before them.

Dominic sat at the head of the table in his wheelchair, dressed in a crisp charcoal button-down shirt that masked the lingering paleness of his skin.

“Sit down, Ms. Foster,” Dominic said, his voice cutting through the quiet room without a hint of its usual razor-sharp hostility.

Megan hesitated for a fraction of a second before pulling out a high-backed leather chair, lifting Leo up into a booster seat that Nancy had miraculously scavenged from somewhere in the mansion.

For several minutes, the only sound in the room was the gentle clinking of silverware against fine china as Leo eagerly dug into a bowl of sliced strawberries.

Megan kept her eyes focused on her plate, her mind turning over every possible scenario that could explain the bizarre turnaround in her employer’s demeanor.

“You didn’t have to stay,” Dominic finally broke the silence, setting his coffee cup down on its saucer with deliberate precision.

“You had a fever high enough to cook an egg,” Megan replied without looking up, her natural defensive instinct flaring right back up. “I wasn’t going to leave a human being to burn up alone in a bed just because you’re intimidating.”

A faint shadow of a smirk touched the corner of Dominic’s lips, though he quickly masked it behind his coffee cup.

“Most people in Atlanta run in the opposite direction when I’m having a bad day,” Dominic remarked quietly.

“Well, I’m not most people,” Megan said, finally raising her eyes to meet his dark gaze. “I have an eighteen-month-old son to feed, rent to pay by the first of the month, and zero patience for brooding billionaires who lock themselves away in dark towers.”

Nancy Price, standing discreetly near the double doors, muffled a sudden gasp of absolute terror behind her hand, expecting Dominic to explode with wrath.

Instead, a low, gravelly chuckle escaped Dominic’s throat—a sound so foreign and unexpected that even Nancy stared at him in wide-eyed shock.

“Rent and formula,” Dominic repeated, leaning back in his wheelchair. “Is twenty-two dollars an hour still covering those expenses, or should we revisit your compensation?”

“Twenty-two dollars is fine as long as you stop moving my cleaning supplies and folders every five minutes,” Megan countered instantly, refusing to show any signs of subservience.

Before Dominic could reply, a sharp, frantic knock echoed through the distant foyer downstairs, followed by the heavy, hurried footsteps of Marcus, the head of Dominic’s private security detail.

Marcus pushed open the dining room doors without waiting for permission, his face pale and etched with grim urgency.

“Boss, we have a serious problem at the front security gates,” Marcus said, his eyes darting nervously toward Megan and the child.

Dominic’s expression hardened instantly into cold, impenetrable stone, all warmth vanishing from his face in a fraction of a second.

“Speak, Marcus,” Dominic commanded, his voice dropping into the terrifying register of a syndicate boss.

“It’s Vincent Gallo’s men,” Marcus reported, stepping closer to the table. “They bypassed the outer perimeter sensors and pulled right up to the main gates in three unmarked black SUVs. Gallo wants a face-to-face meeting immediately, and he’s claiming our Southside real estate acquisitions violated the old territorial pact.”

Vincent Gallo was the ruthless leader of a rival syndicate faction across the state line, a violent predator who had been waiting years for any sign of weakness from the Mason empire.

Dominic’s eyes flashed with lethal fury, knowing full well that Gallo’s sudden appearance at his gates was not a coincidence—someone inside his organization had leaked information about his recent health struggles.

Dominic looked slowly across the dining table, his dark gaze locking onto Megan, who was now holding little Leo tightly against her chest, sensing the sudden shift in atmospheric pressure.
