Chapter 14 - The Purge and the Purification

By dawn, the torrential rain had subsided, leaving the vast grounds of the Buckhead estate drenched in crisp, clean morning light.

Flashing blue and red lights illuminated the long driveway as dozens of federal agents escorted Gallo’s captured operatives into transport vans.

Vincent Gallo, handcuffed and wrapped in a prison blanket, was loaded into an armored vehicle under heavy armed escort.

Dominic sat on the grand front terrace, watching the procession with calm, unblinking eyes as the cool morning breeze ruffled his dark hair.

Beside him stood Agent Thomas Sterling, the deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s southeastern organized crime division.

Sterling held a thick leather binder containing twenty years of meticulous forensic financial evidence that Dominic had delivered to his office hours earlier.

“This dossier contains enough unassailable evidence to dismantle every illicit logistics network from Miami to Chicago,” Sterling said, genuinely impressed.

“Gallo will spend the remainder of his natural life inside a supermax federal penitentiary in Colorado,” the agent added.

“I am not interested in vengeance anymore, Agent Sterling,” Dominic replied, his baritone voice smooth and resonant.

“I am interested in ensuring that my father’s legitimate enterprises are completely separated from the shadows of this city,” Dominic stated.

Sterling nodded respectfully, extending his hand to Dominic.

“Every business license, commercial trust, and property holding associated with Mason Enterprises is officially certified clean,” Sterling confirmed.

“You’ve done a remarkable service for this city today, Mr. Mason,” the agent concluded before turning to join his team in the driveway.

Once the federal vehicles cleared the iron gates, Nancy Price stepped out onto the terrace carrying a silver tray with three cups of fresh coffee.

Her face was lined with the exhaustion of the night, but her eyes shone with a profound, radiant peace she had not felt in decades.

Behind her, little Leo toddled out onto the brick pavers, wearing a clean blue sweater and laughing as he chased a fluttering yellow butterfly across the stone balustrade.

Megan walked beside her son, wearing an oversized gray wool cardigan that Dominic had insisted she borrow against the morning chill.

She stopped beside Dominic’s chair, leaning her hip against the stone wall as she accepted a warm cup of coffee from Nancy.

“Is it really over?” Megan asked softly, looking out over the peaceful Buckhead hills.

“It is completely over,” Dominic answered, looking up at her with clear, untroubled eyes.

“No more loan sharks, no more criminal syndicates, and no more shadows hiding behind the curtains,” Dominic promised.

Nancy smiled warmly, scooping Leo into her arms with grandmotherly affection.

“I believe this young man requires a second helping of blueberry pancakes,” Nancy announced with a twinkle in her eye.

“Pancakes!” Leo cheered, clapping his small hands together as Nancy carried him back into the warm kitchen.

Dominic and Megan remained on the terrace, bathed in the soft, golden warmth of the rising Georgia sun.

Megan took a sip of her coffee, looking down at the scarred, powerful hands of the man sitting beside her.

“You know, I originally planned to quit after my first week,” Megan confessed with a small, self-deprecating chuckle.

“I know,” Dominic replied, a knowing smile playing on his lips.

“You were the most infuriating, controlling, impossible man I had ever encountered,” Megan said, shaking her head.

“And you were the most insubordinate, argumentative, and stubborn cleaner Nancy ever had the misfortune of hiring,” Dominic countered smoothly.

“I had eleven dollars in my account, Dominic,” Megan reminded him softly. “I couldn’t afford to be timid.”

“That eleven dollars bought me the only genuine loyalty I have experienced in forty-two years on this earth,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a tone of quiet reverence.

He reached out and gently took her coffee cup, setting it down on the stone balustrade before taking both of her hands into his.

Megan looked into his eyes, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath the surface of his skin.

“I don’t want you to clean my house anymore, Megan,” Dominic said quietly.

Megan raised an eyebrow, a teasing spark dancing in her blue eyes.

“Are you firing me, Mr. Mason?” Megan asked, tilting her head.

“I am promoting you,” Dominic replied, his deep voice rich with sincere emotion.

“To what position?” Megan whispered, her breath catching in her throat.

“To the only position in this house that truly matters,” Dominic answered softly.

“My partner, my equal, and the keeper of my heart,” Dominic declared without an ounce of hesitation.

Megan’s eyes welled with tears of profound joy, the heavy burden of survival that she had carried alone for so long finally slipping away into the morning light.

She leaned down, wrapping her arms around Dominic’s neck and burying her face in the curve of his shoulder.

Dominic pulled her tightly against his chest, holding her with a fierce, protective tenderness that sealed their unspoken promise forever.
