Chapter 3 - The Ghost On The Line And The Lake Michigan Coordinates

The sound of Clara Marino’s voice echoing through the quiet executive office felt like a physical blow, knocking the wind completely out of Dante as he stood paralyzed in the center of the room.

His broad shoulders trembled slightly, a rare display of raw vulnerability that none of his enemies, associates, or terrified captains had ever witnessed in all the years of his bloody reign.

“Clara?” Dante finally choked out, his deep baritone cracking around her name as if he were tasting broken glass, his hand gripping the satellite phone so tightly his knuckles turned completely white.

“Did you really think a few sticks of dynamite in a sedan could keep us apart forever, my love?” the voice on the other end replied, carrying a chilling, theatrical sweetness that sent a collective shiver down the spines of everyone listening in the room.

Sal whimpered from his spot on the floor, curling into a tight ball as he realized that the monster he had tried to manipulate was now fully awakened and staring down an abyss far darker than mere financial ruin.

Dante didn't care about Sal anymore; his entire universe had shrunk down to the tiny speaker grill emitting the breath of a woman he had buried a decade ago.

“Where are you?” Dante demanded, his voice shifting instantly from stunned disbelief back into the commanding authority of a ruthless mafia kingpin preparing for war.

“If this is some sick psychological game played by my rivals, I will tear this city apart brick by brick until I find the bastards responsible—”

“It’s no game, Dante,” Clara interrupted smoothly, a faint, dry laugh echoing through the connection just before a loud click signaled the abrupt termination of the call.

The screen went dark, leaving Dante staring blindly at the device as the dial tone buzzed monotonously against his ear before automatically disconnecting.

Slowly, Dante lowered his hand, his dark eyes vacant and haunted as he turned his head to look at me standing by the doorway with the open tablet still clutched tightly in my hands.

“Emily,” Dante whispered, his voice dangerously low as he stepped past the whimpering form of Sal Genovese without giving him so much as a second glance.

“Get the SUV armored, alert the inner-circle strike team, and pull up every single security feed surrounding that Lake Michigan warehouse property within the last forty-eight hours.”

“I'm already two steps ahead of you, Mr. Marino,” I replied briskly, stepping fully into the room and tapping three quick commands onto my tablet to transmit the encrypted GPS coordinates directly to the dashboard navigation system of Dante’s private vehicle downstairs.

“I've already alerted Marcus and the tactical transport unit, and I've routed our private satellite feed to track any thermal signatures or vehicle movements around that abandoned industrial sector.”

Dante stopped walking, his penetrating gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart skip an erratic beat despite my professional composure.

“You aren't staying behind in the office today, Emily,” Dante stated firmly, leaving no room for argument as he grabbed his custom wool overcoat from the mahogany rack by the door.

“If Clara is alive, or if this is an elaborate trap engineered to assassinate me, I need my best financial strategist and operational mind by my side to dissect every digital trace they leave behind.”

“My brother’s monthly care facility payment clears tomorrow morning, Mr. Marino, so if getting shot at in an abandoned warehouse near the lake is now officially part of my executive secretarial job description, I expect hazard pay added to this month's direct deposit,” I retorted coolly, adjusting my glasses as I followed him out the door.

Dante let out a short, dark scoff that sounded dangerously close to a genuine chuckle, confirming that my audacity was the only thing capable of pulling him back from the brink of absolute madness.

We descended the private executive elevator in absolute silence, stepping out into the subterranean parking garage where a heavy-duty black Cadillac Escalade armored with ballistic plating and military-grade run-flat tires awaited us with its engine idling smoothly.

Marcus, the head of Dante’s personal security detail, held the rear door open for us, his face carved from granite as he handed Dante an extra assault rifle and a fully loaded Glock sidearm.

“Status report, Marcus,” Dante commanded sharply as he slid into the leather-trimmed interior, gesturing for me to sit beside him in the back seat while my laptop rested across my knees.

“We have three tactical support vehicles trailing fifty yards behind us, Boss,” Marcus reported crisply, slamming the heavy armored door shut before sliding into the front passenger seat.

“No local law enforcement activity detected near the Lake Michigan sector, but thermal imaging shows at least four heat signatures moving inside the primary warehouse building associated with the storage key.”

May you like

Dante nodded grimly, racking the slide of his pistol with a sharp metallic clack as the convoy sped out of the subterranean garage and accelerated rapidly into the rainy Chicago evening.

I kept my eyes glued to my laptop screen, watching the digital satellite feed as our vehicles tore through the wet, slick streets, racing headfirst toward a confrontation that would either resurrect a dead queen or bury the entire Marino empire once and for all.
