Chapter 7 - The Secret In The Offshore Vault

Before Dante could deliver his final verdict, a sharp, frantic electronic beep echoed from the small tactical comms earpiece tucked discreetly inside my left ear.
“Emily, we’ve got movement on the southern perimeter access road,” Marcus whispered harshly, his voice tight with sudden urgency as his night-vision feed flickered on his wrist monitor.
“Two unmarked black SUVs just bypassed our remote road sensors without tripping the local frequency overrides—they're moving fast with their headlights killed, and they're flanking our position right now.”
My professional instincts flared instantly, overriding the dramatic confrontation unfolding in front of me as I frantically tapped a series of shortcut commands onto my tablet to pull up our secondary perimeter surveillance cameras.
“Mr. Marino, we’ve been compromised,” I announced clearly, stepping out from the shadows and breaking into their intense dialogue without an ounce of hesitation.
“Someone tipped off an opposing faction about this meeting; external assets are converging on our location, and they've cut off our primary extraction route back to the highway.”
Dante’s head snapped toward me instantly, his dark eyes shedding their hypnotic trance as his tactical mindset took total control once again.
“Whose men are they, Emily?” Dante demanded, striding over to my side while casting one final, lingering look toward his resurrected wife.
“Based on the vehicle chassis signatures and the encrypted radio frequency hopping I'm intercepting from their comms traffic, it’s not the Outfit,” I replied swiftly, my fingers flying across the screen to decrypt their incoming packets.
“It’s the Chicago branch of the Russian Bratva, led by Viktor Petrov—and judging by the heavy ordnance they're carrying, they didn't come here to negotiate a truce.”
Clara’s expression hardened instantly, her calm composure evaporating as the sudden reality of an outside threat crashed into her carefully constructed homecoming.
“Viktor... that greedy bastard has been trying to muscle into my port logistics accounts for the past six months,” Clara hissed, her teeth clicking together in pure frustration.
“He must have followed Sal’s digital paper trail when the three million was transferred out of the offshore shell company.”
Dante let out a dark, cynical chuckle, his hand dropping naturally to grab his assault rifle off the concrete floor where he had dropped it moments earlier.

“It appears, my dear Clara, that your grand resurrection has just invited a pack of wolves right into our backyard,” Dante said, racking the bolt of his weapon with a sharp, lethal metallic snap.
“Let’s see if your digital empire knows how to bleed when the bullets start flying.”
