Chapter 9 - The Traitor’s Final Gambit

Before the echoes of the gunfire could even fade into the cavernous rafters of the warehouse, a desperate, high-pitched scream pierced through the din from the dark administrative corridor behind us.

“Mr. Marino! Please, don't let them kill me! I didn't mean to give them the access codes!”

Dante and Clara both froze.

Emerging from the shadows of the collapsing office wing came Salvatore Genovese, his expensive silk suit torn and covered in soot, dragging himself along the floor with both hands while bleeding profusely from a grazing wound on his shoulder.

Following closely behind him, stepping out from the smoke with a cruel, mocking grin etched across his scarred face, was Viktor Petrov himself—a hulking Russian enforcer holding a heavy assault rifle pressed firmly against Sal’s trembling temple.

“Well, well, look what the Siberian wind blew in,” Viktor boomed in thick, heavily accented English that resonated loudly over the dying echoes of gunfire.

“The legendary Dante Marino, mourning his resurrected ghost while his entire criminal empire crumbles into ash around his feet.”

Dante slowly lowered his rifle barrel just an inch, his dark eyes narrowing into twin slits of pure, unadulterated murder as he stared at the Russian boss.

“Let the captain go, Viktor,” Dante commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made even the hardened mercenaries hesitate for a fraction of a second.

“He’s already a dead man for stealing from my accounts; you don't need to soil your hands executing my garbage.”

Sal wept openly, his face pressed against the cold concrete as he looked up at Dante with pleading, tear-filled eyes.

“Mr. Marino, he forced me, he threatened my family, he said if I didn't give him Clara’s storage locker location he would burn my entire life to the ground—” Sal sobbed hysterically.

Clara stood up slowly from behind the shelving unit, her expression hardening into absolute ice as she stared down the traitor who had helped facilitate her secret escape only to sell her out to the highest bidder when the pressure mounted.

“You pathetic coward, Sal,” Clara spat out with venomous disgust, stepping into the open light with her chin held high.

“You couldn't even keep a secret for ten years without collapsing the moment a real predator walked into the room.”

Viktor let out a booming laugh, pressing the barrel of his rifle a fraction of an inch deeper into Sal’s temple.

“Save your domestic family reunion for hell, Mrs. Marino,” Viktor sneered, his finger tightening against the trigger.

“Drop your weapons right now, all of you, or this traitor’s brains paint the concrete wall behind him.”
