Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Ambush

Forty-eight hours after the violent extraction at St.
Jude Memorial, the glass-and-steel headquarters of Thorne Maritime Logistics on Wacker Drive stood under siege.
Not by armed soldiers or police cruisers, but by the relentless, crushing machinery of an economic and legal decapitation.
At ten o'clock sharp, the annual emergency shareholder meeting convened on the fifty-second floor of the corporate tower.
Julian Thorne sat at the head of the immense oval boardroom table, exuding an air of arrogant, untouchable invulnerability.
Beside him sat his younger sister, Genevieve Cross, nervously twisting a three-carat diamond ring around her trembling finger.
Surrounding the table were thirty of the city’s wealthiest institutional investors, port authorities, and maritime board members, all murmuring anxiously about the catastrophic collapse of the company’s stock.
Julian slammed his palm against the polished mahogany table, silencing the room instantly.
“Gentlemen, please!” Julian projected smoothly, flashing a charismatic, polished smile.
“The temporary volatility in Thorne stock is the result of malicious market manipulation orchestrated by criminal elements tied to Gideon Vale.
I assure you, by the end of today’s session, my late sister Helena’s fifty-percent voting shares will be fully transferred into my hands under the family trust clauses.”
“That transfer will never take place, Julian,” a deep, commanding voice boomed from the double boardroom doors.
The heavy mahogany doors swung open with tremendous force, revealing Gideon Vale standing tall, immaculate in a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit.
Beside him walked Mallerie Reed Vale, her head held high, looking every inch the formidable matriarch in an elegant midnight-blue dress that radiated grace and power.
Walking between them, holding Mallerie’s right hand and Gideon’s left hand, was ten-month-old Owen, taking unsteady, adorable toddler steps into the corporate arena.
Behind them marched Victoria Sinclair, flanked by two armed federal marshals and four city prosecutors carrying stacks of sealed federal indictments.
Gasps of utter astonishment echoed across the boardroom as board members rose to their feet.
Julian’s face drained of every drop of blood, his polished facade instantly crumbling into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom.
“What is the meaning of this circus, Gideon?” Julian snarled, rising from his chair.
“You cannot bring a street server and a fraudulent child into a closed executive board session!”
Victoria Sinclair stepped forward, slamming a heavy stack of legal documents onto the center of the table before the corporate secretary.
“These documents represent a certified federal injunction issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois,” Victoria announced with ringing authority.
“As of eight o'clock this morning, Gideon Vale and Mallerie Reed Vale are legally recognized as the co-guardians and legal parents of Owen Vale.”
“Owen is not Helena’s son!” Genevieve shrieked, her voice high and panicked as she clutched Julian’s arm.
“He has no claim to the Thorne Maritime trust!
He is a nobody’s bastard!”
Mallerie took three deliberate steps forward, her eyes locking onto Genevieve with the terrifying ferocity of a mother confronting the predators who had hunted her child.
“Owen is my biological son, Genevieve,” Mallerie said, her voice clear, cold, and echoing off the glass walls.
“The boy you paid two million dollars to steal from my arms while I lay sedated in Room 304.”
The boardroom erupted into furious, chaotic shouts as institutional investors turned on Julian and Genevieve in horror.
“That is a slanderous fabrication!” Julian roared, slamming his fist down.
“Security, clear this room immediately!”
The corporate security guards stationed at the doors did not move; they had already been relieved and disarmed by Marcus’s tactical team in the lobby.
One of the federal prosecutors stepped forward, holding an encrypted digital tablet linked to the main boardroom projection screens.
“Mr.
Thorne, forty-eight hours ago, Dr.
Harrison Vance and Nurse Evelyn Diaz provided full video depositions detailing the conspiracy to abduct Baby Boy Reed,” the prosecutor stated.
The massive wall displays lit up, showing Dr.
Vance sitting in a federal interrogation room, weeping as he displayed the original Cayman Islands wire transfer signed by Julian Thorne himself.
Beside the video feed appeared bank transaction records showing Genevieve Cross’s offshore accounts receiving half a million dollars forty-eight hours after Helena Vale’s death.
Genevieve collapsed into her leather chair, burying her face in her hands and sobbing hysterically.
“Julian forced me!” Genevieve wailed, pointing an accusatory finger at her brother.
“He told me Gideon would ruin us if Helena died without an heir!
He organized the mercenary at the gala!
He planned everything!”
“Shut up, you idiot!” Julian screamed, his aristocratic composure completely shattering as he lunged toward his sister.
Before Julian could take two steps, Gideon crossed the floor with blinding speed.
He caught Julian by the throat with an iron grip, shoving the billionaire CEO backward against the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the Chicago skyline.
The glass groaned under the impact, casting a terrifying reflection of Gideon’s lethal fury.
“You stole my wife’s peace on her deathbed,” Gideon whispered, his gray eyes burning with cold, murderous intent.
“You paid a coward to rip an infant from a mother’s breast.
And you dared to send a gun into a room where my son was resting.”
Julian choked, clawing at Gideon’s fingers, his arrogant eyes finally wide with the primal terror of a dying man.
“Gideon,” Mallerie’s soft, steady voice called out from across the room.
Gideon paused, his muscles coiled, ready to snap Julian’s neck with a single twist of his wrist.
He looked back over his shoulder at Mallerie.
She stood holding Owen against her hip, the baby looking at Gideon with wide, curious eyes.
“Don’t do it,” Mallerie said gently, shaking her head.
“He isn’t worth the blood on your hands.
Owen deserves a father who comes home, not a father who spends his life in a federal penitentiary.”
Gideon stared at Mallerie, the furious storm in his chest slowly subsiding under the warmth of her voice.
He looked back at the terrified, pathetic man pinned against the window, then released his grip with utter disgust.
Julian collapsed to the carpet, coughing violently, gasping for air.
The two federal marshals moved forward immediately, clicking steel handcuffs around Julian’s wrists, followed by a second pair around Genevieve’s wrists.
“Julian Thorne, Genevieve Cross, you are under arrest for federal conspiracy, child abduction, wire fraud, and attempted murder,” the marshal announced, dragging them toward the doors.
As Julian was hauled past Mallerie, his venomous eyes glared at her one last time.
“You think you’ve won, you little waitress?” Julian spat, blood trickling from his lip.
“You think a mob boss will ever truly love another man’s child?”
Mallerie looked at him with profound pity, her hand resting securely on Owen’s back.
“He already does, Julian.
Something a hollow monster like you could never understand.”
As the doors clicked shut behind the disgraced siblings, the remaining board members stood in reverent, stunned silence.
Victoria Sinclair picked up the gavel from the center of the table and handed it to Gideon.
Gideon took the heavy brass mallet, looked at Mallerie, and held it out toward her open palm.
“Together, Ms.
Reed,” Gideon murmured, a genuine, radiant smile touching his lips.
Mallerie smiled back, placing her hand over his as they struck the gavel against the mahogany table with a resounding, decisive crack that echoed across the Chicago financial world.

The Thorne empire had fallen.
The stolen heir was legally, permanently home.
