Chapter 14 - Shadows in the Garden

The celebration of Owen’s first steps continued through dinner, but as night descended over Lake Geneva, a subtle shift occurred across the estate’s security monitors.

In the underground security command center, Marcus stood before a wall of digital displays, his brow furrowing as a silent red alert flickered on Sector Four—the perimeter gate bordering the dense pine forest.

“Boss,” Marcus spoke into his encrypted comm-link, his voice dropping into low, professional focus.

Inside the private study on the third floor, Gideon was reviewing architectural blueprints for the new pediatric wing Mallerie was funding at St.

Jude.

He tapped his ear-piece instantly.

“Report, Marcus.”

“We have thermal movement along the northern tree line,” Marcus replied, typing rapidly across the master console.

“Single intruder, moving low under the brush, utilizing military-grade night-vision shielding.

Not local wildlife, and not a stray hunter.”

Gideon’s eyes narrowed into cold, lethal slits.

He locked his tablet and stood up silently, ensuring the security door to the private residential wing was double-bolted from the inside where Mallerie and Owen were currently reading bedtime stories.

“Is perimeter lockdown active?” Gideon asked, his voice chilling the air of the study.

“All automated turrets and sensors are online,” Marcus confirmed.

“Strike Teams Bravo and Charlie are moving in from the eastern ridge to flank the intruder before they reach the main courtyard.”

“Do not kill them,” Gideon commanded coldly as he unlatched a custom wall-safe behind his mahogany desk and retrieved a heavy Beretta 92FS.

“I want to know who is still stupid enough to test the Vale name.”

Within four minutes, the security feeds showed the intruder—a lone, agile operative wearing a black tactical wetsuit—breaching the outer ornamental fountain wall and sprinting toward the glass conservatory.

The operative reached into a waterproof thigh holster, pulling out a heavy explosive breaching charge intended for the reinforced kitchen doors.

He never got the chance to plant it.

Marcus and two tactical enforcers dropped silently from the second-story overhang like shadows, landing directly on top of the operative before he could raise his weapon.

The struggle was brief, brutal, and entirely silent.

Within sixty seconds, the intruder was stripped of his comm-gear, zip-tied at the wrists, and dragged across the frost-covered grass toward the subterranean holding annex.
