Chapter 9 - Shadows Over St. Jude

By three o'clock that afternoon, Chief Judge Sterling had signed the emergency court order in a closed-door judicial chamber.

The fraudulent death certificate of Baby Boy Reed was officially expunged from state archives, replaced by an amended birth certificate naming Mallerie Reed as his mother.

Simultaneously, the civil marriage license and expedited co-guardianship filings were processed under judicial seal, shielding the documents from public inspection.

Yet as the legal foundation solidified, the physical threat outside the courtroom doors grew increasingly volatile.

Back at the penthouse, Marcus walked into Gideon’s private study, his expression darker than usual.

“Boss, we have a critical situation at St.

Jude Memorial.”

Gideon looked up from his desk, where he was reviewing the newly executed custody documents.

“What happened?”

“Dr.

Vance’s primary surgical nurse, Evelyn Diaz, just attempted to contact our secure tip line from a public phone booth outside the hospital,” Marcus reported.

“She claimed that Julian Thorne’s men entered the neonatal administrative records room twenty minutes ago and are actively purging all physical backup drives.”

Mallerie, who had been sitting on the leather sofa watching Owen play with a set of plush building blocks, stood up immediately.

“Evelyn Diaz was the head nurse who delivered Owen,” Mallerie said, her voice tight with urgent memory.

“She was the one who whispered to me about his crescent birthmark before they sedated me!

She knows everything!”

Gideon stood up, his jaw hardening into lethal resolve.

“Julian is destroying the paper archives to leave no corroborating witness testimony for our federal racketeering filing against Thorne Maritime.”

“We have to protect her, Gideon,” Mallerie pleaded, stepping toward him.

“She’s the only medical professional who witnessed the entire crime from start to finish.”

Gideon turned to Marcus.

“Mobilize Strike Team Alpha.

We are moving to St.

Jude Memorial immediately.”

“Gideon, wait,” Mallerie said, grabbing his forearm.

“Take me with you.”

Gideon stopped, frowning down at her with intense protective concern.

“Absolutely not.

It is an active tactical zone.

You and Owen stay here behind reinforced security doors.”

“Julian’s men don’t know Evelyn Diaz personally, but I do,” Mallerie argued fiercely, refusing to back down.

“She will never trust a squad of armed mob enforcers pulling up in blacked-out SUVs.

She will run or panic, and Julian’s men will kill her before you can extract her.

If she sees my face, she will come quietly.”

Gideon stared at Mallerie, wrestling with the sheer reckless danger of the proposal versus its undeniable tactical merit.

He looked toward the playpen, where two trusted female security operatives were already standing guard over Owen.

“Owen stays in the safe room beneath the penthouse with four armed guards,” Gideon conceded, his voice brooking no compromise.

“You wear a Kevlar vest under your coat, you stay behind my shoulder at all times, and the second I tell you to drop, you hit the floor.

Understood?”

“Understood,” Mallerie nodded without hesitation.

Twenty minutes later, a convoy of three armored black SUVs sliced through the pouring Chicago rain, speeding toward the medical district.

Inside the lead vehicle, Mallerie adjusted the heavy ballistic vest beneath her dark wool coat, her hands cold with adrenaline.

Beside her, Gideon checked the slide of a suppressed tactical pistol, slipping it into his custom shoulder holster with practiced ease.

“Are you frightened?” Gideon asked quietly, observing the tension in her jaw.

“Terrified,” Mallerie admitted honestly, meeting his gaze.

“Ten months ago, I was helpless.

I was strapped to a bed while they stole my life away.

I am never going to be helpless again.”

Gideon’s eyes held a fierce, burning admiration as he reached over and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.

“You are the bravest woman I have ever known, Mallerie.”

The convoy pulled into the underground ambulance bay of St.

Jude Memorial, the tires squealing against the damp concrete.

Marcus and four heavily armed enforcers moved out first, securing the stairwells and service corridors with silent efficiency.

Gideon led Mallerie through the rear maintenance entrance, bypassing the main reception area entirely.

The third-floor neonatal wing was eerily quiet, the sterile white corridors illuminated by flickering emergency backup lights.

The usual bustling sounds of doctors and pediatric monitors were completely absent; the entire floor had been placed on a sudden 'administrative evacuation' due to a reported gas leak.

“It’s an ambush protocol,” Marcus whispered, raising his weapon as they approached the records archive room at the end of the hall.

The heavy wooden door to the archives stood slightly ajar, a sliver of light spilling across the linoleum floor.

Gideon shoved Mallerie gently behind the cover of a recessed vending alcove, signaling for Marcus to flank the entrance.

Inside the room, the sound of tearing cardboard, shattering hard drives, and muffled weeping could be heard clearly.

“Where are the 2025 microfiche logs, Evelyn?” a harsh, unfamiliar voice snarled from within the room.

“Julian Thorne doesn’t like repeating himself.”

“I don’t know!

I swear to God, Dr.

Vance kept those in his private safe!” a woman’s terrified voice cried out.

Mallerie recognized the voice instantly—it was Nurse Evelyn Diaz.

Gideon gave Marcus a sharp hand signal, and both men breached the room with explosive, overwhelming violence.

Two armed operatives wearing tactical vests spun around, but Gideon fired two suppressed rounds with lethal precision, dropping both hostiles before their weapons could clear their hips.

A third mercenary grabbed Nurse Diaz from behind, holding a combat knife against her throat as he backed toward the emergency fire exit.

“Drop the guns or I carve her open!” the mercenary screamed, his eyes wild with panic.

Before Gideon could line up a shot without risking the hostage, Mallerie stepped into the doorway, her voice ringing out clear and authoritative.

“Evelyn!

Drop your weight right now!”

Nurse Diaz heard Mallerie’s voice, recognized the desperate mother from ten months ago, and instantly dropped her entire body to the floor like a sack of stones.

The mercenary was caught completely off-balance, his chest exposed for a fraction of a second.

Gideon fired a single round through the man’s shoulder, sending him crashing backward through the fire doors into the stairwell, where Marcus subdued him instantly.

Silence descended over the shattered archive room, broken only by Evelyn Diaz’s hysterical sobs.

Mallerie rushed forward, dropping to her knees and wrapping her arms around the trembling nurse.

“It’s over, Evelyn.

You’re safe now.”

Evelyn looked up into Mallerie’s face, her tear-filled eyes widening in absolute horror and shame.

“Mallerie...

oh God, Mallerie, I am so sorry!” Evelyn wept, clinging to her coat.

“They threatened my children!

Julian Thorne told me he would butcher my family if I spoke!

Your baby is alive, Mallerie!

Your baby is alive!”

“I know, Evelyn,” Mallerie whispered, pulling the woman to her feet.

“He’s safe at home with his father.

And now, you are going to help us destroy the monsters who did this.”
