Chapter 2 - The Summoning at the Mahogany Table

The heavy oak doors of Samuel Price’s downtown law office closed with a resounding thud that echoed off the polished marble floors.

Daniel marched into the conference room like a man accustomed to owning every room he entered.

Vanessa followed closely behind him, her heels clicking aggressively against the floorboards as if she were walking down a runway.

Eleanor settled into a high-backed leather chair with an audible sigh of aristocratic annoyance.

"This entire spectacle is entirely unnecessary," Eleanor declared, adjusting her diamond earrings.

"Daniel is the sole surviving spouse, and under state law, everything Claire owned automatically transfers to him."

"That is precisely what we are here to verify, Mrs. Mercer," Samuel Price said smoothly, pulling a thick manila folder from his briefcase.

I sat quietly in the corner seat, keeping Lily safely settled in my lap while I unclipped my reading glasses from my pocket.

Daniel tossed his wet umbrella into the brass stand and pulled out a chair for Vanessa before taking a seat himself.

"Let's make this quick, counselor," Daniel said, checking his watch impatiently.

"Vanessa and I have urgent family matters to attend to this evening."

"I am certain you do, Daniel," Samuel replied, opening the folder with deliberate slowness.

"However, Claire anticipated your schedule precisely."

Samuel slid a multi-page legal document across the mahogany table toward Daniel.

"Before we review the distribution of assets, we must address the preliminary addendum attached to the will."

Daniel frowned, scanning the first paragraph without much concern.

"This is just standard boilerplate language about marital property," Daniel dismissed, leaning back in his chair.

"Not quite, Mr. Mercer," Samuel corrected, his tone turning sharp and professional.

"Look at Section Four, Subsection B."

Daniel leaned forward again, his eyes scanning the dense legal text.

Within seconds, the smug color completely drained from his face, leaving his skin the shade of old parchment.

"What is the meaning of this?" Daniel choked out, his voice suddenly pitching an octave higher.

"This clause is completely absurd and legally baseless!"

Eleanor leaned over her son's shoulder to read the page, and her jaw dropped in sheer disbelief.

"You cannot be serious," Eleanor stammered, staring directly at Samuel Price.

"Claire attempted to freeze Daniel out of his own marital estate?"

I quietly stroked Lily's hair, watching the panic unfold across their faces like a slow-motion car crash.

"Claire did not freeze anyone out," Samuel stated calmly, looking directly into Daniel's wide, terrified eyes.

"She merely exercised her absolute legal right to protect her assets from individuals who conspired against her financial and physical safety."

Daniel slammed both palms flat against the mahogany table, making the water glasses rattle.

"She was dead! She didn't write this!" Daniel shouted, losing the composed facade he had maintained all afternoon.

"My signature as a witness and my office's video recording of Claire signing this document seventy-two hours before her passing say otherwise, Mr. Mercer," Samuel replied evenly.

Vanessa reached across the table to touch Daniel's arm, her voice laced with sudden anxiety.

"Daniel, what does it say? What are they talking about?"

Daniel didn't answer her; his eyes were fixed on me with sudden, venomous realization.
