Chapter 7 - The Collapse of an Aristocratic Illusion

News of Daniel Mercer's dramatic arrest at his former mother-in-law's law firm spread through local media outlets like wildfire.
By evening, news vans were parked outside Eleanor Mercer's sprawling estate in the affluent gated community of Oakridge.
Eleanor paced back and forth across her imported Persian rug, staring frantically at her silent mobile phone.
She had spent the last two hours calling every high-profile judge and political donor she knew, but every single one of them had suddenly stopped returning her calls.
The social empire she had spent decades building was dissolving before her eyes.
Her son wasn't just facing a messy divorce anymore; he was staring down a capital felony charge for premeditated homicide and insurance fraud.
A sharp knock echoed through the foyer, followed by the sound of the front door opening.
Eleanor rushed out into the hallway, expecting her son's defense attorney to deliver some miraculous news.
Instead, three corporate representatives from Mercer Holdings walked in uninvited, carrying cardboard boxes.
"What is the meaning of this intrusion?" Eleanor demanded, puffing up her chest with aristocratic disdain.
"How dare you enter my home without permission?"
The lead executive, a solemn man named Mr. Henderson who had worked with Claire's family for years, looked at Eleanor with quiet pity.
"We are here on behalf of the corporate board of directors, Mrs. Mercer," Henderson said flatly.
"Effective immediately, Daniel has been stripped of his executive vice presidency and removed from all company accounts."
Eleanor’s face turned the color of ash.
"You cannot do that! Daniel owns thirty percent of this company!"
"Not anymore, Mrs. Mercer," Henderson corrected her, placing a legal document on the entryway table.
"The forensic audit conducted by Mrs. Hale proved that Daniel embezzled corporate funds to finance his personal debts and his affair."
"The board has voted unanimously to freeze all of his assets and transfer voting control back to the primary trust."
Henderson turned around and walked out the door, leaving Eleanor standing alone in her grand, empty foyer.
The illusion of untouchable wealth and prestige had finally shattered into a million irreparable pieces.

She realized with terrifying clarity that Margaret Hale hadn't just exposed a murder plot; she had systematically dismantled the entire foundation of the Mercer dynasty.
There was no one left to bribe, no PR firm to spin the story, and no way out of the financial abyss.
