Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The silence in the conference room grew so dense you could hear the distant ticking of the wall clock.

Daniel slowly sank back into his chair, his fingers trembling as he clutched the edge of the legal document.

"You planned this," Daniel whispered, staring directly at me with eyes full of sudden terror.

"You and Claire put this trap together before she died."

"I merely taught my daughter how numbers never lie, Daniel," I replied softly, my voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel.

"And Claire was an exceptional student."

Attorney Samuel Price turned the page of the legal file, revealing a series of printed bank statements and corporate audit reports.

"Let us review the financial timeline leading up to Mrs. Mercer's tragic accident," Samuel announced, addressing everyone in the room.

"Three months ago, a shell corporation named V&D Holdings was established in the Cayman Islands."

Vanessa flinched visibly, pulling her hand away from Daniel's arm.

"One hundred and fifty thousand dollars from Claire's personal inheritance account was quietly transferred into V&D Holdings without her authorization," Samuel continued, reading directly from the financial audit.

" Furthermore, a secondary term life insurance policy worth two million dollars was taken out on Claire's life, with Daniel Mercer listed as the sole beneficiary."

Eleanor slammed her hand on the table, glaring at Samuel.

"My son is a successful businessman! He has every right to manage joint marital funds and secure insurance for his family!"

"He would have that right, Mrs. Mercer, if the insurance application hadn't been forged using a digital signature pad that Claire never touched," Samuel countered smoothly.

I reached into my handbag and pulled out a slim manila folder of my own, placing it gently on the table.

"Daniel always thought I was just a retired librarian who spent her days cataloging dusty books," I said quietly, opening my folder to reveal meticulous spreadsheets.

"He forgot that before libraries, I spent decades auditing offshore accounts and uncovering corporate embezzlement."

Daniel swallowed hard, his throat dry.

"You... you hacked my computer?"

"I didn't need to hack anything," I replied, meeting his terrified gaze.

"Claire noticed strange discrepancies in your joint tax filings three weeks ago."

"She brought those statements to me, and together we traced every single unauthorized withdrawal straight to Vanessa's boutique business account."

Vanessa stood up abruptly, her face flushing crimson with anger and embarrassment.

"This is defamation! I am calling my lawyer right this second!" Vanessa shrieked, reaching for her designer handbag.

"Sit down, Miss Cole," Samuel Price commanded, his voice carrying the absolute authority of the court.

"Leaving the room right now will only be interpreted as obstruction of a criminal financial investigation."

Daniel grabbed Vanessa's wrist—ironically, the exact wrist wearing Claire's star bracelet—and yanked her back down into her seat.

"Shut up, Vanessa," Daniel hissed through gritted teeth.

"Just shut up and let me handle this."

"You can't handle this anymore, Daniel," I said, leaning forward across the table.

"Because the financial audit was only the first envelope Claire left behind."
