Chapter 3 - THE GATHERING STORM: RECRUITING AN UNLIKELY ALLY IN THE WAR AGAINST ELENA

The morning sun cast a bright, cheerful glow across the manicured lawns of the Sterling estate, but inside the master study, the atmosphere was as cold and tactical as a military war room.

Sophie was upstairs in her bedroom, sleeping peacefully under the watchful eye of a trusted, thoroughly vetted night-nurse Richard had flown in from Chicago at dawn.

Richard sat behind his desk, his laptop open to the exported video files, when a soft knock sounded at his study door.

“Come in,” Richard said evenly.

The door clicked open, and Marcus, the senior head of Richard’s private security detail, stepped inside, closing the door securely behind him.

“You wanted to see me, Mr. Sterling?” Marcus asked, his posture rigid and professional.

“I did, Marcus,” Richard said, spinning his laptop around so the screen faced the security chief. “I need you to watch this footage. Every second of it.”

Marcus stepped forward, his eyes scanning the screen as the video played out—the pantry lock-in, the dog bowl humiliation, and most damningly, the speakerphone conversation featuring Elena’s voice plotting to steal Sophie’s trust fund.

As the audio ended, Marcus’s face darkened into a dangerous scowl.

“That is despicable, sir,” Marcus muttered, his jaw clenching. “If you want me to handle Mrs. Elena outside of legal channels, just give the word. We can make her disappear for a few weeks.”

“No, Marcus,” Richard replied calmly, holding up a hand. “We aren't going to break any laws. We’re going to use the law as a wrecking ball. Elena and Vanessa thought they were operating in the shadows, but they made a fatal mistake: they left a digital paper trail.”

Richard pulled a thumb drive from his USB port and handed it to Marcus.

“I want you to take this drive to Detective Miller at the downtown precinct. He’s an old friend of mine from law school. Tell him I want formal criminal charges filed immediately for child abuse, unlawful imprisonment, conspiracy to commit fraud, and extortion.”

“Consider it done, Mr. Sterling,” Marcus said, pocketing the drive. “What about Mrs. Elena? Do we bring her in?”

“Not yet,” Richard smiled, a cold, humorless expression touching his lips. “Let her sweat. Let her think her plan is still working. I want to invite her over for a quiet family dinner tonight under the guise of ‘discussing Sophie’s behavioral issues.’ Let’s see how well she acts when she walks into the lion’s den.”

Marcus’s eyes gleamed with cold satisfaction. “I’ll have the perimeter secured, sir. Nobody leaves this property until you give the signal.”

“Good. Dismissed, Marcus.”

As the security chief left the study, Richard picked up his desk phone and dialed his sister’s private cell number.

It rang twice before Elena answered, her tone carrying that familiar, practiced note of sisterly concern.

“Richard? Is everything alright? Vanessa just called me in hysterics claiming you threw her out.”

Richard kept his voice steady, masking the volcano of rage boiling beneath his calm exterior.

“She’s gone, Elena. I threw her out. Sophie is a wreck, and honestly, I don't know how to handle her alone. Can you come over for dinner tonight? We need to talk about Sophie’s custody and her trust fund.”

A breathless, greedy pause hung on the other end of the line. Elena thought she was walking into a victory lap.

“Of course, Richard,” Elena replied smoothly, trying desperately to hide her excitement. “I’ll be there at seven sharp. Hang in there, little brother.”

Little brother.

May you like

Richard slammed the phone down onto its cradle, a dark, dangerous promise echoing in his mind.

By midnight, she wouldn't be calling him anything at all.
