Chapter 9 - THE ULTIMATE SURRENDER: VANE’S DESPERATE PLEA AND THE FINAL NAIL IN THE COFFIN

Back at the county detention facility, the sudden federal indictment of Judge Arthur Pendelton sent shockwaves through the inmate holding block.
Vanessa—still awaiting trial for her role in Sophie’s abuse and illegal imprisonment—suddenly realized that the powerful legal shield Elena had promised her was nothing more than an illusion.
Through her court-appointed defense attorney, Vanessa frantically requested an immediate, unscheduled meeting with Richard Sterling, offering to turn state’s evidence against Elena in exchange for a reduced sentence.
Richard agreed to the meeting, walking into the sterile, glass-partitioned visitation room of the county jail with the cold, impassive demeanor of an apex predator.
Vanessa sat on the other side of the glass, wearing her orange jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her face gaunt and desperate.
“Richard! Oh, thank God you came,” Vanessa babbled frantically into the telephone receiver, pressing her face against the Plexiglas. “I’ll tell you everything! I’ll sign an affidavit! Elena was the mastermind behind the whole thing! She forced me to lock Sophie in the pantry, she told me to use the dog bowl, she promised me a cut of the trust fund if I helped her drive you insane and force a guardianship transfer!”
Richard listened to her frantic confessions without changing his expression by a single micro-expression.
“I know, Vanessa,” Richard said quietly into his receiver. “I already had the smart-hub audio recordings, the financial spreadsheets, and the text message logs.”
Vanessa stopped dead, her eyes widening in sheer horror. “Then... why are you here? If you already have everything, why agree to meet with me?”
“Because I wanted to look you in the eye,” Richard said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet whisper. “And I wanted to tell you that despite your desperate little plea deal, I am personally funding a civil lawsuit for punitive damages against you for emotional distress and child endangerment. You will spend every single dime you ever earn for the rest of your natural life paying restitution to my daughter.”

Vanessa let out a strangled, pathetic wail, slamming her fist against the glass partition before the guards grabbed her by the shoulders and dragged her kicking and screaming back down the concrete cell block.
Richard hung up the phone, stood up, smoothed down the lapel of his tailored suit, and walked out of the prison doors into the brilliant, golden afternoon sunlight.
