Chapter 1 - The Breath Beneath the Soil

The crushing weight of the damp earth pressed against the heavy oak lid like an unyielding mountain of stone.

Emily Harper lay paralyzed in the absolute darkness, her lungs screaming for oxygen that refused to circulate in the cramped wooden box.

Every single fiber of her being trembled as she tried to process the surreal nightmare that had swallowed her whole.

She could still hear the muffled, rhythmic thuds of soil raining down upon her temporary tomb, sealing her fate from the living world.

Her hands, bruised and bloodied from frantic scratching, searched blindly in the pitch-black void for a way out.

The horrifying truth echoed inside her mind with terrifying clarity: her own beloved husband, Daniel, had deliberately buried her alive.

She clutched her daughter Sophie’s silver bracelet tightly in her palm, drawing a fragile sliver of strength from the metallic chill.

The memory of Daniel’s cold voice whispering to an unknown woman above ground played on an endless loop in her aching head.

"They'll believe the accident," he had said, dismissing her existence as easily as one might brush dust off a coat.

She was thirty-two years old, yet her mind was a fractured puzzle missing crucial years of memories, secrets, and lies.

A chilling warning flickered through her consciousness from a forgotten hospital room: "If anything happens to you, don't trust anyone."

The footsteps above had faded away into the eerie silence of the isolated forest cemetery, leaving her entirely alone with her dread.

Emily knew that weeping would only waste the dangerously scarce air trapped inside the coffin with her trembling body.

She pressed her palms flat against the rotting wood of the lid and began to push with every ounce of remaining adrenaline.

A sharp crack echoed through the confined space as the aged screws groaned under the intense pressure of her desperate shove.

She planted her boots firmly against the bottom panel and shoved upward again, refusing to surrender to an untimely grave.

A cascade of loose dirt poured down through a sudden fracture in the wood, stinging her eyes and filling her parched throat.

With one final, agonizing roar of defiance, she forced the splintered lid wide open and gasped in the sweet, cold night air.

May you like

She pulled herself out of the dark pit, coughing violently, her eyes adjusting to the pale moonlight filtering through the dense canopy.

Standing amidst the freshly turned earth of her own grave, Emily realized that surviving the coffin was merely the very beginning.
