Chapter 5 - The Final Confession

Daniel shrieked in sudden, agonizing pain, releasing his death grip on Emily's throat as he stumbled backward against the console.
Blood soaked rapidly through his expensive dress shirt, staining the pristine white fabric a deep, terrifying shade of crimson.
Emily scrambled to her feet, gasping for air, clutching the bloodied letter opener tightly in her hand as she stared down at him.
Claire screamed hysterically, pressing herself flat against the wall of the staircase, utterly paralyzed by the sudden turn of events.
"Where is my daughter, Daniel?" Emily demanded, stepping forward with such ferocious authority that Daniel shrank back in terror.
"She's... she's not dead," Daniel whimpered, clutching his bleeding shoulder while coughing up crimson flecks from the sheer shock.
Emily’s heart stopped for a fraction of a second. "What did you do with Sophie? Where is my little girl hiding?"
"We didn't hurt her," Claire blurted out from the stairs, shaking uncontrollably. "We sent her away to my sister in Vermont."
"Why?" Emily’s voice trembled with a mixture of immense relief and searing rage that threatened to consume her entire being.
"Because she saw us switch the medication," Daniel confessed tearfully, his cowardice completely overriding his desire for self-preservation. "She knew you weren't sick. We had to hide her so you couldn't take her away when our plan began."
Emily raised the letter opener higher, stepping closer until the cold tip rested gently against the hollow of Daniel’s trembling throat.
"You're going to write a full confession right now, detailing every single crime, every bank account, and every lie you've told," she commanded.
Claire nodded frantically, scrambling for a pen and paper from the desk while realizing their elaborate empire had completely collapsed.
Outside, the faint wail of approaching police sirens began to echo through the quiet suburban neighborhood, growing louder by the second.
Emily looked out the window at the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the driveway, knowing her nightmare was finally over.

Daniel slumped against the wall in handcuffs ten minutes later, weeping silently as officers led him past the threshold into the cold night.
