Chapter 6 - The Road to Vermont

The harsh glare of the interrogation room lamp cast long, distorted shadows across the cold steel table at the Massachusetts state precinct.

Emily sat upright in her metal chair, her fingers lightly tracing the worn silver texture of Sophie’s bracelet while reviewing the signed confession papers.

Detective Miller slid a thick manila folder across the surface, his expression a mix of professional awe and deep sympathy for her ordeal.

"Daniel and Claire are locked up without bail, Mrs. Harper, and federal prosecutors are already seizing their hidden offshore accounts," Miller stated softly.

Emily nodded slowly, her mind entirely fixated on the secondary address scribbled hastily in Claire’s frantic handwriting during her arrest.

"My daughter Sophie is currently living under an assumed guardianship in a small secluded town outside of Burlington, Vermont," Emily said firmly.

"We’ve already coordinated with the Vermont State Police, Emily; a social services unit is standing by to secure her safety the moment you arrive," Miller assured.

The journey north across state lines felt like driving through a surreal dreamscape where every mile pulled her further away from her living nightmare.

The autumn foliage painted the New England highways in brilliant shades of crimson and gold, mirroring the vibrant resilience blooming within her heart.

She stared out the passenger window of the unmarked police cruiser, watching the rural landscape shift from dense suburbs to rolling mountain ranges.

Three years of stolen memories couldn't be reclaimed overnight, but the burning desire to hold her little girl anchored her through the exhaustion.

When the cruiser finally turned down a quiet, gravel-paved lane flanked by towering pine trees, Emily’s breath caught sharply in her throat.

A modest, cedar-shingled farmhouse came into view, surrounded by an overgrown garden and a rusted swing set swaying gently in the afternoon breeze.

Detective Miller parked the vehicle near the mailbox, giving Emily an encouraging nod as he switched off the engine and opened the car door.

She stepped out onto the crisp gravel, her legs trembling slightly as she walked up the wooden pathway toward the sun-drenched front porch.

The front door creaked open before she even had a chance to raise her hand to knock, revealing a tall, stern-looking woman in a knitted cardigan.

"Can I help you?" the woman asked, her eyes narrowing suspiciously as she took in the police presence standing at the edge of her property.

Emily’s voice caught in her windpipe as she stepped past the threshold, fighting back the overwhelming wave of tears threatening to overflow.

"I’m looking for a little girl named Sophie," Emily whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion as the living room door behind the woman clicked open.
