Chapter 1 - THE HEIRESS OF THE SHALLOW WATERS

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly upon the pristine marble tiles of the Sterling estate, casting long, fractured shadows across the crystal-clear surface of the infinity pool. Water rippled lazily against the edge, disturbed only by the frantic splashing of a silver-rimmed stroller that had somehow slipped down the manicured slope of the patio. Inside the grand manor, crystal chandeliers chimed in the stifling heat, oblivious to the impending chaos that was about to shatter the illusion of elite perfection.

Elena Vance did not hesitate when the stroller pitched forward into the deep end. Her soaked cotton uniform, already damp from scrubbing the expansive kitchen floors, clung tightly to her frame as she sprinted across the stone pavers. She did not stop to calculate the risk, nor did she care about the expensive embroidery on her apron; her entire world narrowed down to the bright red woolen jacket of the baby thrashing beneath the surface.

She hit the water with a sharp, heavy splash, the chlorine stinging her eyes as she plunged into the cold depths. Her arms churned powerfully through the resistance, closing the distance in seconds before her fingers grazed the soft fabric of the infant's clothing. Twisting upward, she broke the surface just as her lungs burned for air, hoisting the crying child high above her head into the safety of the open sunlight.

"I saved him!" Elena gasped, coughing water from her throat as she waded toward the shallow steps.

Before she could even catch her breath or check if the infant was breathing normally, running footsteps pounded furiously against the marble patio. Victoria Sterling, draped in an emerald-green silk dress that rustled like dry autumn leaves, rushed past the terrified onlookers and pushed herself directly into Elena's personal space. Her face was twisted in a mask of calculated panic, her sharp fingernails pointing accusingly straight into Elena's wet face.

"She pushed him in!" Victoria shrieked, her voice cutting through the quiet garden like a jagged knife. "I saw her! She tried to drown my nephew!"

Elena froze on the bottom step, the infant whimpering softly against her collarbone while the water dripped in steady streams from her hair.

"What are you talking about?" Elena cried out, her voice cracking with sheer disbelief as she clutched the baby tighter to her chest. "I just pulled him out from the bottom!"

"Liar!" Victoria screamed back, turning frantically toward the grand French doors as heavy footsteps echoed from inside the house. "Arthur! Arthur, thank God you're here! This wretched girl tried to murder the baby!"

Arthur Sterling burst onto the patio, his tailored jacket slightly rumpled, his face pale and contorted with absolute terror. He didn't even look at the Maid’s soaked clothes before he reached into his jacket, pulled out a pair of handcuffs, and revealed his true identity to the patio.
