Chapter 7 - THE CONFRONTATION AT THE GATES

The antique glass panels of the abandoned greenhouse cast eerie, fractured reflections in the moonlight as Elena and Arthur sprinted through the overgrown aisles of ferns and dry vines. The air smelled of wet earth and sweet-rotting vegetation, thick and heavy in their lungs as they pushed past a rusted iron door that opened directly onto the main entrance circle.

Victoria’s black sedan was already rolling toward the wrought-iron security gates, its tires hissing softly against the damp asphalt of the driveway.

"Stop right there! Federal Agent!" Arthur roared, bursting out from the side hedge with his badge raised in one hand and his weapon pointed firmly at the ground ahead of the vehicle.

The sedan screeched to a sudden, violent halt, kicking up a small cloud of dust. The driver's side door pushed open, and Victoria stepped out, her emerald silk dress catching the amber glow of the security lights. She didn't look panicked; instead, a cold, calculated smile played across her lips as she reached back inside the car and pulled out a small, heavy ledger wrapped in leather.

"You're too late, cousin," Victoria called out, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "The federal transfer codes have already been transmitted to an offshore account. Even if you arrest me, the money is gone."

"You're committing treason, Victoria," Arthur said, taking slow, deliberate steps forward while keeping his weapon steady. "You framed an innocent woman, you endangered an infant, and you stole classified state assets."

"Treason?" Victoria laughed, a sharp, brittle sound that echoed off the brick gateposts. "I'm securing our family's rightful legacy. Uncle Robert left everything to that brat in the cradle, completely ignoring the people who actually built this empire."

"He left it to his grandson because he knew you were embezzling from the foundation," a frail, steady voice interrupted from the darkness near the gatehouse.

Sam stepped out from the shadows, leaning slightly on a wooden cane, holding a small digital audio recorder in his withered hand. The tiny red LED light on the device was blinking rhythmically.

Victoria's confident smile faltered for the first time, her eyes darting toward the old groundskeeper with a sudden flash of genuine panic. "You... you old fool."

"I recorded every conversation you had with the offshore brokers in the east pavilion," Sam said calmly, holding the device up like a shield. "Including the part where you discussed getting rid of the baby if he ever inherited the full trust."
