Chapter 8 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE WEB

Victoria's composure shattered completely as she realized the evidence was right there in the old man's hand. With a feral snarl, she dropped the leather ledger, lunged back into the sedan, and slammed her foot down hard on the accelerator, tires spinning wildly against the gravel before shooting straight toward the open security gates.

"She's escaping!" Elena shouted, pointing toward the vehicle.

Arthur didn't hesitate. He raised his service weapon, aimed carefully at the rear left tire of the speeding sedan, and squeezed the trigger.

BANG.

The gunshot cracked through the night air like thunder. The rear tire exploded in a shower of sparks and shredded rubber, causing the luxury sedan to veer violently to the right, crashing hard into the brick pillar of the security gate with a deafening screech of crumpled metal and shattering glass.

Silence descended upon the entrance circle, broken only by the hiss of the steaming radiator and the faint rustle of leaves in the wind.

Arthur and Elena rushed forward, pulling the jammed driver's side door open with a combined heave. Victoria slumped against the deployed airbag, dazed and bleeding slightly from a scratch on her forehead, utterly defeated as the heavy steel cuffs were locked securely around her wrists for the second time that evening—though this time, there was no escape.

"Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for federal embezzlement, attempted murder, and conspiracy," Arthur recited, his voice completely steady as he read her rights under the cold moonlight.

As the local backup units finally arrived sirens wailing in the distance, illuminating the grand estate with flashing red and blue lights, Arthur turned slowly toward Elena, who stood quietly by the edge of the drive, the dampness of her uniform finally drying in the night breeze.

"You saved my nephew," Arthur said softly, stepping closer to her with an expression of profound, quiet gratitude that wiped away all the earlier coldness. "And then you saved my entire investigation. How can I possibly thank you?"

May you like

"Just tell me I'm getting my salary bumped," Elena replied with a faint, tired smile, finally letting out the breath she had been holding since the afternoon sun hit the pool.

Arthur laughed—a genuine, warm sound that felt like spring after a long, brutal winter—and reached out to gently take her hand. The nightmare at the Sterling estate was finally over, and as the police cruisers escorted Victoria away into the darkness, a new, unbroken dawn began to rise over the quiet waters of the patio.
