Chapter 13 - The Copycat Plot And The Echo Of The Past

The heavy oak doors of my private study closed firmly behind us, sealing out the cool night air and the unsettling tension of the courtyard encounter.
Chloe Dawson sat on the velvet armchair by the crackling fireplace, clutching a warm cup of herbal tea in her trembling hands while Miller stood guard near the doorway.
I sat across from her at the mahogany desk, carefully opening the damp manila envelope she had handed me out in the courtyard.
Inside were pages of financial documents, corporate employment contracts, and—most chillingly—a newly drafted life insurance policy worth twenty million dollars, issued through the exact same shadowy brokerage firm Brandon had used two years ago.
"Look at the beneficiary clause," Chloe whispered hoarsely, staring into the flickering flames of the fireplace as tears rolled quietly down her cheeks.
"It’s not me. It’s not even our two-year-old daughter. It’s a corporate trust managed by a woman I’ve never met... a woman who happens to be my husband’s new executive assistant."
A cold, dead silence settled over the study.
My blood turned to ice, not out of fear, but out of a sudden, blistering surge of pure, unadulterated fury.
It was happening again.
The exact same playbook. The same corporate loopholes, the same fraudulent brokerage firms, the same sociopathic rationalization that a human life could be traded on the open market for a payout.
"What is your husband's name, Chloe?" I asked, my voice dropping to a low, dangerous register that made even Miller shift his weight in alert anticipation.
"Marcus Dawson," she replied, her lower lip trembling as she looked up at me with wide, desperate eyes.
"He’s a mid-level regional director for Apex Capital—one of the shell companies Brandon created before his arrest. When Brandon went down, Marcus managed to hide a portion of the unrecovered capital, and now... now he thinks he can finish what Brandon started."
I slid the documents across the mahogany desk, my eyes narrowing as I scanned Marcus Dawson’s employment profile and digital footprint.
"He thinks because Brandon is behind bars, the system is asleep," I said, a chilling smile touching the corners of my lips.
"He thinks he’s an original mastermind, when in reality, he’s just a pathetic copycat wearing stolen shoes."
Chloe leaned forward, gripping the arms of the chair with white-knuckled tension.
"He told me we were taking a romantic weekend getaway this Friday to a secluded cabin in the Cascade Mountains," she choked out, her voice rising in panic.
"He insisted on a hiking trail near a steep ridge... he said it would help us 'repair our marriage.' When I found these papers hidden in his briefcase this morning, I realized what he was planning to do."
I stood up slowly from my desk, walking over to the window to look out over the dark waters of the lake, my reflection staring back at me with the absolute coldness of a survivor who refused to let lightning strike twice.
"You're not going to that cabin alone, Chloe," I said quietly, turning around to face her.
"You're going to let him think he’s leading his lamb to the slaughter."
Chloe gasped, her eyes widening in terror and disbelief.
"You want me to walk into a trap?!"
May you like
"Not a trap," I corrected, a dark, calculating glint flashing in my eyes.
"A hunting expedition. And this time, the hunter is going to find out what it feels like to be caught in the jaws of the wolf."
