Chapter 4 - The Secret Alliance And The Trap Within The Mansion

By nightfall, the tension inside the main house had reached a boiling point.

Through the thermal-imaging cameras we had discreetly installed around the perimeter of the estate, Miller and I watched Brandon and Gretchen pacing opposite sides of the massive living room.

They weren't drinking champagne anymore.

Instead, bottles of expensive scotch were scattered across the coffee table, and the air was thick with accusations, panic, and escalating desperation.

"You told me this was foolproof!" Gretchen shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as she pointed an accusing finger at Brandon.

"You promised me we’d be sitting on fifty million dollars by the end of the week! Now your accounts are frozen, and the lawyers are demanding an forensic audit of every dime we spent over the last two years!"

Brandon slammed his tumbler down on the granite bar top, sending amber liquid splashing over the edge.

"Shut your mouth, Gretchen!" he roared, closing the distance between them with a menacing stride.

"If it wasn't for my brilliant plan, we’d still be suffocating under my old corporate debt! I got rid of her, didn't I? The police bought the story hook, line, and sinker!"

"Yeah, well, the police aren't the ones freezing your assets, are they?!" she spat back, her eyes narrowing with sudden, venomous realization.

"What if someone knows? What if Eleanor said something before she... you know?"

"She fell off a four-hundred-foot cliff during a blinding whiteout," Brandon hissed through clenched teeth, though a tiny flicker of genuine fear danced in his eyes.

"Nobody survives that. Nobody."

I stood in the darkness of the guest house living room, listening to every word broadcasted through our hidden audio feeds, a cold, humorless smile playing on my lips.

"He’s starting to sweat," Miller observed quietly, checking the battery levels on our surveillance gear.

"At this rate, he’s going to do something stupid within forty-eight hours."

"People like Brandon don't wait forty-eight hours when they feel cornered," I replied, my eyes locked on the thermal monitors.

"They double down. He’s going to try to liquidate whatever physical assets are left in the estate before the court-appointed receiver arrives tomorrow morning."

Sure enough, less than an hour later, Brandon stormed out of the living room and headed straight toward his private executive home office on the ground floor.

Through our remote camera hack, I watched him punch the digital override code into his heavy wall safe behind the mahogany bookshelf.

The steel door swung open, revealing stacks of passports, bearer bonds, gold bullion, and a hidden compartment containing a Sig Sauer 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

He didn't hesitate.

He grabbed the firearm, checked the magazine to ensure it was fully loaded, and tucked it neatly into the waistband of his trousers beneath his suit jacket.

"He’s arming himself," Miller said, his hand instinctively dropping to his service weapon.

"Should we move in and detain him now?"

"No," I whispered sharply, holding up a hand to stop him.

"Let him run. Let him pack his bags and try to flee the country. Because the moment he steps foot outside these gates with a loaded firearm and a stash of illegal bearer bonds, he commits a federal felony flight violation."

"You want him to try and escape?" Miller asked, a slow grin spreading across his rugged face.

"I want him to dig his own grave," I corrected softly, turning my gaze toward my sleeping son in the bassinet.

"A shallow grave, just like the one he tried to push me into."

Throughout the night, the mansion remained a hive of frenetic activity.

Gretchen packed three large designer suitcases, her face flushed with anger and fear as she demanded to know Brandon’s escape plan.

"We’re taking the private yacht docked at the slip behind the boathouse," Brandon snapped, tossing cash and passports into a leather duffel bag.

"We head down the coast to Mexico, lay low in Cabo until my offshore accounts clear through our secondary shell entities, and then we disappear."

"And the house? The cars? Everything else?" Gretchen asked, her voice trembling.

"Let the courts have it," Brandon snarled.

"As long as I have my freedom and enough capital to start over, I don't give a damn about the rest."

From the guest house, I watched them load their luggage into the back of Brandon’s black Mercedes SUV parked in the underground garage.

It was 3:00 AM.

The estate was shrouded in eerie silence, broken only by the gentle lapping of lake water against the private dock.

"They're moving," I announced, picking up my encrypted burner phone and dialing Marcus.

"Marcus, the rat is fleeing the ship. Notify the Coast Guard and the federal marshals stationed at the southern perimeter."

"Understood," Marcus replied instantly.

"The federal trap is set. They won't make it past the outer buoy."

I handed my son gently to Sergeant Miller, who cradled the infant with surprising tenderness and professional care.

"Keep him safe, Sergeant," I instructed, my voice thick with emotion as I pressed a kiss to my baby's forehead.

"Where are you going, Eleanor?" Miller asked, his eyes filled with sudden concern.

"I’m going to make sure my husband sees a ghost before the handcuffs go on," I replied, slipping a heavy woolen coat over my shoulders and stepping out into the cold, damp night air.
