Chapter 4 - Beneath the Gilded Surface and the Echoes of Betrayal

On the fourth day,
I received a package from Elias.
Inside was the vintage Chanel gown.
It was stunning—a deep,
bruised crimson that seemed to swallow the light.
Along with it was a pair of silk gloves,
long enough to hide the brace on my wrist.
I tried it on,
the fabric feeling like cool water against my skin.
For a moment,
I didn't recognize the woman in the mirror.
She looked powerful.
She looked dangerous.
But the bruise on my cheek,
now a fading yellow,
reminded me of the cost of this transformation.
I spent the morning finalizing the 'freeze' command.
I had written a script that would broadcast the transfer details to every major news outlet and regulatory body in the city the moment I hit 'enter.'
It would also trigger a block on the Solara accounts,
citing suspected money laundering.
The beauty of the plan was that it used Celeste’s own greed against her.
She had set up the accounts to be untraceable,
but that also meant they were unprotected by the standard safeguards of a legitimate bank.
Once the freeze was in place,
she wouldn't be able to move a single cent without revealing her identity.
I was interrupted by a knock at the door.
My heart leapt into my throat.
I moved to the door and looked through the peephole.
It was a courier.
I opened the door,
and he handed me a thick envelope.
"Sign here,"
he said,
his voice bored.
I signed with my left hand,
my pulse racing.
Inside the envelope was a legal notice from Adrian Vale’s attorneys.
It was a non-disclosure agreement,
along with a check for fifty thousand dollars.
The letter stated that the money was a 'severance package,'
contingent upon my immediate signature and the return of any 'proprietary information' I might have obtained.
It was hush money.
A bribe to keep the 'maid' quiet.
I looked at the check.
Fifty thousand dollars could pay for my mother’s care for a year.
It could give me a fresh start.
It was the easy way out.
I felt a surge of rage so intense it made my vision blur.
They thought they could buy my silence for the price of one of Celeste’s handbags.
They thought my dignity had a price tag.
I took the check and the NDA,
walked to my small kitchen,
and turned on the stove.
I watched as the paper caught fire,
the flames licking at the elegant script of the Vale law firm.
I watched until the documents were nothing but grey ash in the sink.
The message was clear:
I didn't want their money.
I wanted their ruin.
I went back to my laptop and added a new layer to the script.
Not only would I freeze the $22 million,
but I would also leak the NDA and the check to the press.
I would show the world exactly how the Vales handled their 'problems.'
As the afternoon faded into evening,
I felt a strange sense of calm.
The pieces were all in place.
I was no longer reacting;
I was directing.
I watched the news,
seeing a brief segment about the upcoming Vale-Harrington gala.
It was being billed as the social event of the season,
a celebration of love and legacy.
I smiled at the screen.
"Enjoy your party,
Celeste,"
I whispered.
"It’s the last one you’ll ever attend as a free woman."
I spent the night reviewing the floor plans of the Metropolitan Club,
where the gala was being held.
I knew the service entrances,
the staff corridors,
and the locations of the security cameras.
I knew how to move through that building like a shadow.
They wouldn't see me until I was standing right in front of them.
And by then,
it would be too late.
The pain in my wrist had subsided to a steady,
manageable ache.
It was no longer an injury;
it was a compass,
pointing me toward the gala.
Three days left.
May you like
The air in the apartment felt electric,
the silence heavy with the weight of what was to come.
