Chapter 5 - The Invitation to Ruin and the Midnight Reckoning

The fifth day was a test of nerves.

I had to go back to the Vale townhouse.

Not as myself,

but as a delivery person.

I needed to plant a physical bypass device on their main router to ensure my script would have uninterrupted access during the gala,

even if they tried to shut down their network.

I dressed in a generic courier uniform,

a cap pulled low over my eyes.

The bruise on my face was covered with heavy theatrical makeup Elias had provided.

My arm was tucked into a sling hidden beneath the oversized jacket.

As I approached the house,

my heart was a frantic drum against my ribs.

Every instinct told me to run,

to stay away from the place where I had been humiliated.

But I forced myself forward.

I walked up the service entrance and rang the bell.

A new maid answered.

She looked young,

scared,

and exhausted.

I felt a pang of sympathy for her.

She was the new 'me.'

"Delivery for Mr. Vale,"

I said,

keeping my voice low.

"Needs to be signed for by the house manager."

She nodded and turned to call for someone.

In those few seconds,

I stepped inside.

The router was located in a cabinet near the pantry,

a fact I knew from my months of cleaning.

I moved with the silent efficiency of a ghost.

I opened the cabinet,

plugged the small,

black device into the secondary port,

and closed it just as the house manager appeared at the end of the hall.

I stepped back toward the door,

holding out a dummy package.

"Sorry,

I thought I heard someone in here,"

I said,

tilting my head so the cap blocked my face.

The manager,

a stern man who had always looked through me when I was a maid,

scrawled a signature on my digital pad.

"Get out,"

he snapped.

"We’re busy preparing for the event."

"Have a nice day,"

I said,

my heart nearly bursting.

I walked out of the house and didn't stop until I was three blocks away.

I leaned against a brick wall,

gasping for air.

I had done it.

The physical link was established.

I was now the invisible hand inside their home.

When I got back to my apartment,

I checked the connection.

The device was working perfectly.

I had a direct,

unfiltered stream of every bit of data moving through the Vale network.

I spent the night listening to their conversations.

I heard Celeste talking to her contact in Monaco.

"Is the account ready?"

she asked,

her voice cold and businesslike.

"The transfer will initiate during the toasts.

By the time the gala is over,

the money will be gone."

The contact said something I couldn't hear,

and she laughed.

"Adrian?

He’s a fool.

He thinks I’m his salvation.

He doesn't realize I’m his ending."

I recorded everything.

The evidence was now beyond financial;

it was personal.

She was admitting to the fraud,

the manipulation,

and the intent.

I looked at the vintage dress hanging on the back of my door.

It looked like a splash of blood against the white wood.

Tomorrow was the eve of the gala.

The day the world would start to tilt.

I lay down on my bed,

but I didn't sleep.

I watched the digital clock on my laptop,

the numbers ticking away.

I thought about the antique clock in the foyer.

I thought about the $22 million.

But mostly,

I thought about the look on Celeste’s face when she realized that the maid who reads...

had read her entire life.

And now,

she was going to write the final chapter.

Two days left.

The reckoning was almost here.

The trap was set,

May you like

the bait was taken,

and the predator was about to become the prey.
