Chapter 8 - The Ballroom of Broken Mirrors and the Uninvited Guest

The ballroom was a masterpiece of opulence,

a gilded cage filled with the most powerful predators in the city.

The scent of expensive lilies and aged bourbon filled the air,

mingling with the low hum of a hundred simultaneous conversations.

At 8:30 p.m.,

I decided it was time to descend.

I didn't use the service stairs this time.

I walked to the main staircase,

the one reserved for the grand entrances of the debutantes and the billionaires.

I paused at the top of the marble steps,

feeling the weight of a thousand eyes beginning to shift toward me.

I wasn't on the guest list,

but in a room like this,

confidence is the only invitation you need.

I began my descent,

the red silk of my gown whispering against the marble.

The music didn't stop,

but the volume of the conversation dipped.

I could see people whispering,

wondering who the woman in red was.

I saw Adrian first.

He was standing near the champagne fountain,

holding a glass he hadn't touched.

He looked up,

and for a second,

his expression went blank.

He didn't recognize me at first—the dress,

the hair,

the posture were all wrong.

But then,

as I reached the bottom step,

our eyes locked.

I saw the moment of recognition hit him like a physical blow.

He went pale,

his hand trembling slightly,

causing the champagne to ripple in his glass.

Beside him,

Celeste was busy holding court with a group of investors.

She didn't see me until I was ten feet away.

When she finally turned,

her smile froze.

It was the most satisfying thing I had ever seen.

Her eyes traveled from my face down to my gloved arms,

and finally to the way I stood—no longer bowed,

no longer subservient.

"Mara?"

she hissed,

her voice low enough that only those in our immediate circle could hear.

"What the hell are you doing here?"

"I believe I forgot to return something,"

I said,

my voice projecting clearly,

carrying across the nearby tables.

Adrian stepped forward,

his voice a frantic whisper.

"Mara,

you need to leave.

Now.

I sent you the money.

We have an agreement."

"You have an agreement with a maid,

Adrian,"

I said,

tilting my head.

"But you never had an agreement with me."

Celeste recovered her composure,

her eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom.

"Security!"

she called out,

her voice sharp.

"We have a trespasser.

This woman was a former employee who was fired for theft."

Two large men in black suits began to move through the crowd toward us.

The guests were now fully focused on the drama unfolding in the center of the room.

I didn't move.

I didn't flinch.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you,

Celeste,"

I said,

reaching into my small clutch and pulling out a remote trigger.

"Because if those men touch me,

the projection screens in this room will show something much more interesting than your engagement photos."

Celeste laughed,

a harsh,

ugly sound.

"You're delusional.

You have nothing."

"I have the footage from 4:17 p.m. last Tuesday,"

I said.

"The footage of you crushing my wrist under your heel while your fiancé watched in silence."

The color drained from Celeste’s face.

Adrian looked like he was about to faint.

"And I have something else,"

I added,

stepping closer to her.

"I have the routing numbers for Solara Holdings.

I have the $22 million you just tried to steal from the Vale estate.

And I have the freeze order from the forensic compliance division."

The silence in the ballroom was absolute now.

Even the orchestra had stopped playing.

Celeste’s hand went to her throat,

her fingers clutching her diamond necklace as if it were a noose.

"You're lying,"

she whispered,

but the tremor in her voice betrayed her.

"Am I?"

I asked.

I pressed the button on the remote.

The giant LED screens at the end of the ballroom flickered to life.

But it wasn't a picture of me.

It was a live ticker of the Solara Holdings account.

The balance was shown in bright red:

$22,000,000.00.

And across the middle of the screen,

in bold,

black letters,

were the words:

ACCOUNT FROZEN — UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.

The room erupted into a cacophony of gasps and whispers.

I looked at Celeste and smiled.

May you like

"The maid who reads...

just finished the book."
