Chapter 8 - THE EMERALD BRIDE: CLAIMING MY CROWN BESIDE THE NEW KING OF NEW YORK

Three months later, the private rooftop terrace of the Sanctum Tower in downtown Manhattan was bathed in the warm, golden glow of sunset, overlooking the glittering expanse of the New York skyline.
There were no two hundred judgmental socialites. There were no reporters, no flashbulbs, and no uninvited family members trying to steal the spotlight.
Just a small, select group of people who truly mattered: Grandpa Walter, looking healthy and vibrant in a sharp tweed suit, sitting comfortably in an armchair; Director Vance of the federal intelligence syndicate; and a handful of loyal associates who knew the true cost of survival.
And standing at the altar beneath an archway of white roses and green ivy was Adrian Voss.
He wore a classic black tuxedo, his shoulders broad, his obsidian eyes fixed entirely on me as I walked down the aisle.
I wore a custom-tailored, floor-length ivory silk gown, simple yet breathtaking, and resting gently against my collarbone was the custom emerald pendant necklace that Adrian had forged for me in his private alpine vault the night the world changed.
My father figure, Grandpa Walter, stood proudly beside me, offering his arm as he walked me toward the man who had rewritten the rules of my universe.
When we reached the altar, Grandpa kissed my cheek, looked Adrian dead in the eye, and whispered, “If you ever hurt her, son, my security systems will find a way into your penthouse.”
Adrian didn't flinch. He smiled—a rare, radiant expression reserved entirely for me—and nodded. “Understood, Walter. I wouldn't dream of it.”
The officiant—a retired federal judge who owed Adrian more favors than he could count—smiled and began the ceremony.
There were no long, flowery vows about corporate synergy or mutual utility.
Just simple, unyielding promises of absolute loyalty, protection, and unconditional love.
“Do you, Adrian Voss, take Camille Hart to be your lawfully wedded wife, to stand beside you in the light and in the shadows, to rule this world as one?”
“I do,” Adrian said, his voice deep, steady, and absolute.
“And do you, Camille Hart, take Adrian Voss to be your lawfully wedded husband, to share his life, his strength, and his empire?”
“I do,” I replied, my voice ringing clearly across the Manhattan rooftop.
Adrian slipped the heavy platinum and diamond band onto my finger, sealing the vow.
“I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Adrian pulled me gently against his chest, his lips capturing mine in a deep, passionate kiss that made the surrounding city lights feel like background noise.
As the small crowd applauded, I looked out past the rooftop edge toward the sprawling, glittering expanse of New York City.
Preston Carrington was currently working as a low-level regional clerk in a third-rate logistics firm in Ohio.
Madeline was living in a cramped, sublet studio apartment in Queens, working double shifts at a diner, entirely cut off from high society.
And I—the quiet, overlooked baker’s daughter, the former fiancée of a cheating corporate heir—was standing proudly as the undisputed queen beside the most feared and powerful man in America.
