Chapter 10 - The Siege of the Inner Courtyard

The main iron gates of the Moretti estate blew outward in a blinding flash of orange fire and jagged iron shrapnel as a massive explosive charge detonated against the pillars. Thick gray smoke billowed across the snow-covered courtyard, partially obscuring the three black commercial vans and two unmarked sedans that poured aggressively through the breach like a mechanical flood.
Twenty-five heavily armed operatives in reinforced tactical gear swarmed out of the vehicles instantly, their automatic rifles raised as they fanned out across the open lawns and began laying down a devastating suppressive fire against the estate's reinforced perimeter positions. Bullet holes instantly chewed through the ancient stone facade, shattering decorative urns and turning the pristine courtyard into a chaotic war zone.
From the reinforced sniper positions along the second-floor balcony, Alessandro’s loyal guards returned fire with lethal, disciplined precision, picking off the lead frontline operatives before they could reach the main entrance doors. Brass casings rained down onto the stone terrace like metallic hail as the deafening crack of automatic weapons fire drowned out the roaring wind coming off the river.
In the center of the swirling chaos, Alessandro Moretti stood calm and unyielding behind a thick marble pillar near the grand double doors of the foyer, his Sig Sauer pistol raised and firing with absolute, deadly accuracy. Every single squeeze of his trigger dropped an attacker, his movements completely devoid of panic or hesitation. He wasn't merely defending an estate anymore; he was systematically dismantling the last violent remnants of the regime that had tried to steal his family four years ago.
Suddenly, a heavy armored utility van from the incoming convoy broke away from the main assault group, crashing directly through the decorative stone fountain in the center of the courtyard and coming to a violent halt right in front of the grand steps. The rear doors flew open, and five elite enforcers—personally handpicked by Vincent Romano for their absolute ruthlessness—poured out carrying heavy breaching hammers and submachine guns, sprinting directly toward the main entrance.
"Marcus, focus heavy fire on the utility van!" Alessandro shouted into his shoulder radio communicator over the deafening roar of combat.
"On it, Boss!" Marcus replied instantly from the eastern turret.
A barrage of heavy suppressing fire rained down from the upper balconies, cutting down two of the elite enforcers before they could even reach the top steps. But the remaining three slammed their heavy breaching hammer against the reinforced oak double doors with a thunderous blow that splintered the heavy timber locks and blew the doors inward off their hinges.
The smoke-filled foyer was instantly breached.
Alessandro didn't retreat an inch. He stepped smoothly out from behind his marble pillar, raising his pistol with both hands, and squeezed the trigger three times in rapid succession. The lead enforcer dropped instantly, taking a round straight through his protective vest. The second operative managed to fire off a wild burst that chipped the stonework inches above Alessandro’s head before a clean round from Alessandro’s sidearm dropped him hard onto the marble floor.
The final operative raised his submachine gun directly toward Alessandro’s chest, his finger tightening on the trigger—only to freeze mid-motion as a heavy hunting rifle cracked sharply from the upper mezzanine, hitting the operative square in the shoulder and spinning him violently into the wall.
Mr. Bruno stood on the second-floor landing holding an antique hunting rifle, wisps of cordite smoke curling from the barrel, looking down with grim satisfaction. "Never underestimate the old help, young master," the veteran butler muttered dryly, casually reloading the bolt-action rifle.
Alessandro spared a quick, appreciative nod upward before stepping over the fallen operatives and securing the shattered entranceway. Across the courtyard, the remaining Chicago mercenaries, completely demoralized by the heavy casualties and the sudden realization that Vincent Romano’s signed confession had already gutted their internal syndicate loyalty, began dropping their weapons and retreating in blind panic toward the breached gates.
The battle for the estate was decisively over.
Without wasting a single precious second, Alessandro turned sharply on his heel, vaulted over the shattered remains of the oak doors, and sprinted down the winding stone staircase leading directly to the sub-level archive vault where Rosa and Lily were hidden. His heart hammered in his chest, not from fear of the retreating enemy, but from the overwhelming urgency to ensure his family was safe.
He reached the heavy steel vault door of the safe room, slammed his palm against the emergency override panel, and punched in his biometric code. The heavy hydraulic locking mechanism hissed loudly, and the three-ton steel door slowly swung wide open into the amber-lit interior.
Rosa stood immediately beside the inner desk, holding Lily tightly in her arms. Her face was pale, streaked with exhaustion and dried tears, but her eyes were wide with desperate hope as she stared out into the hallway.
"Is it over?" Rosa whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she stepped toward the doorway.
May you like
Alessandro stepped inside the vault, holstering his smoking sidearm, and closed the distance between them in two long strides. He reached out with both hands, gently gathering both Rosa and a sleepy, confused Lily into his strong, protective embrace, burying his face in Rosa’s dark hair as the crushing weight of the past four years finally dissolved completely away.
"It's over," Alessandro whispered fiercely against her ear, holding them both as though he would never let go. "They're gone. And we are never, ever running again."
