Chapter 6 - The Drive North through the Storm

The armored black SUV sliced effortlessly through the torrential sheets of midnight rain lashing across the interstate heading north toward Lake George, its heavy diesel engine rumbling with steady, relentless power. Inside the fortified cabin, the atmosphere was thick with tense silence, broken only by the rhythmic slap of windshield wipers clearing away the deluge.

In the rear passenger compartment, Alessandro sat silently beside Rosa, while Lily slept peacefully across a makeshift cushion of folded wool coats on the rear seat, completely oblivious to the dangerous storm raging both outside and inside the vehicle. Alessandro stared intently out the rain-streaked window at the blurring highway lights, his mind replaying every second of the audio recording they had pulled from the archive vault.

Rosa kept her eyes fixed on the sleeping toddler, her hands nervously twisting the hem of her sweater. The adrenaline rush from the estate lockdown had finally faded, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. Yet, beneath the fatigue burned an undeniable sense of vindication—the terrifying secret that had defined her daily struggles for four years was finally being dragged out into the harsh light of accountability.

"You don't have to come with me, Rosa," Alessandro said quietly, breaking the long silence without turning his head. "When we reach Vance's compound, you and Lily can stay securely inside the armored transport with Marcus's detail."

"I am not hiding in the back seat anymore, Alessandro," Rosa replied firmly, her voice steady and resolute as she turned her dark eyes to meet his gaze. "For four years, I hid in cramped apartments, checked door locks twice, and lived in constant terror of a phone call made by a man I never even met. If you are going to confront the ghost who ruined my life, I am going to be standing right beside you when you do it."

Alessandro held her intense gaze for a long moment, recognizing the fierce, unyielding strength that had kept her and their daughter alive against impossible odds. A rare, respectful nod was his only immediate response, acknowledging her courage without patronizing her.

Up front in the driver’s seat, Marcus glanced back through the rearview mirror, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. "Boss, we're five miles out from the private access road leading to Vance’s estate," Marcus reported crisply over the cabin intercom. "Local intelligence confirms he’s still living there in semi-retirement with a minimal private security detail—maybe four or five armed guards at most. But given the weather and the terrain, we need to approach cautiously so we don't tip him off before we reach the main gate."

"Kill the headlights three miles out and rely on thermal optics," Alessandro instructed coldly. "I want zero warning given. Vance won't have time to burn documents or alert outside contacts."

"Understood," Marcus replied, extinguishing the vehicle's primary lighting array and switching the dash monitors to high-resolution infrared thermal imaging, guiding the heavy SUV smoothly off the main highway and onto the winding, tree-lined mountain access road.

The dense pine forest closed in tightly around them as the armored vehicle climbed higher into the misty Adirondack foothills, the rain turning into a heavy, freezing sleet that clung stubbornly to the glass. Salvatore Vance’s retirement compound was situated on an isolated private peninsula jutting out into the dark, churning waters of Lake George, surrounded by a heavy wrought-iron perimeter fence and monitored by closed-circuit infrared cameras.

As the SUV slowed to a crawl near the automated security gates, the thermal display on the dashboard lit up with distinct heat signatures clustered around a two-story stone-and-timber lodge nestled deep among the trees. At least four armed guards were stationed inside the heated security checkpoint near the gate, while a single warm thermal bloom flickered brightly inside the main study on the second floor of the main lodge.

"They've spotted our approach on the thermal sensors," Marcus warned quietly, slowing the vehicle to a complete stop fifty yards from the iron gates. "The gate guards are stepping out with sidearms drawn."

Alessandro didn't hesitate for a single second. He reached down, unclipped his tactical tactical vest from the floorboard, slipped it over his tailored shirt, and checked the chamber of his sidearm with a sharp, metallic click.

"Stay here with Lily, Rosa," Alessandro ordered, his voice leaving zero room for argument as he reached for the door handle.

"I told you—" Rosa started, but Alessandro cut her off instantly by pressing a firm hand against her shoulder.

"This isn't a negotiation, Rosa. Vance worked for my father, and he knows how Moretti enforcers operate. Let me handle the initial breach, then I will call you up to the lodge once the perimeter is secured."

Before she could protest further, Alessandro pushed the heavy armored door open and stepped directly out into the freezing midnight sleet, signaling Marcus to follow. The icy rain immediately soaked through his shirt, but he didn't even flinch as he strode forward into the dim light of the security checkpoint, stepping directly into the crosshairs of a retired hitman's final sanctuary.
