Chapter 5 - Ghosts in the Archive

The subterranean archive vault hummed with the quiet, rhythmic drone of cooling fans cooling rows of massive, offline server racks that lined the damp stone walls. Unlike the opulent, sunlit rooms of the estate above, this windowless bunker was built to withstand structural blasts and electronic espionage alike, serving as the impenetrable memory bank of the Moretti family empire.
Alessandro sat down sharply in front of the primary tactical terminal, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard to input his personal biometric override codes. The amber glow of the monitor reflected harshly in his dark eyes as streams of encrypted data cascaded down the screen, bypassing the corrupted front-end network and accessing the deep-storage historical archives from four years prior.
Rosa stood quietly behind him, holding a peacefully sleeping Lily against her shoulder. The tension in the small room was so thick it felt almost tangible, every ticking second ticking like a countdown toward a truth neither of them could undo.
"What exactly are we looking for?" Rosa asked softly, breaking the heavy hum of the cooling fans.
"The exact morning logs from the executive switchboard, dated four years ago, precisely six weeks after we met," Alessandro explained without looking away from the scrolling lines of code. "If you called the direct emergency line I gave you on that hotel card, the system automatically recorded the inbound trunk routing, the internal extension it was transferred to, and the digital voiceprint of the operator who answered."
"It was around 7:30 in the morning," Rosa recalled, her voice tightening as the memory rushed back with painful clarity. "I had just finished a brutal overnight cleaning shift at an office building in midtown Manhattan. I was standing in a public payphone booth on Tenth Avenue because my cell phone battery had died in the rain."
Alessandro typed furiously, inputting the specific date range, time stamp parameters, and trunk line identifiers into the search query. A progress bar crawled sluggishly across the screen, reading out cryptographic verification hashes as the offline server decrypted archived audio logs that had remained untouched for nearly half a decade.
"Found it," Alessandro muttered sharply, his fingers freezing over the keyboard.
A single data entry materialized on the monitor screen, displaying a precise timestamp matching Rosa’s recollection down to the exact second. Inbound call from a public payphone trunk in Manhattan. Duration: one minute and forty-two seconds. Transferred internally to Executive Extension 404.
"Extension 404," Alessandro whispered, his expression hardening into absolute stone. "That wasn't a general switchboard operator. That direct extension belongs exclusively to the senior chief of staff's private office."
"Who sat in that office back then?" Rosa asked, her breath catching in her throat.
"My father’s primary right-hand man and legal fixer," Alessandro replied slowly, a dark realization dawning in his eyes. "A man named Salvatore Vance. He managed every dirty detail, every silenced threat, and every brutal containment operation for my father for over thirty years."
"Is he still with the family?"
"He retired two years ago, shortly after my father passed away," Alessandro said, clicking on the archived audio file attached to the data log. "He lives quietly on a heavily guarded private compound upstate near Lake George, collecting a massive pension funded by Moretti enterprises."
Alessandro moved the cursor over the play icon and clicked it once. A faint, static-filled hiss echoed from the terminal speakers, followed immediately by the crisp, unmistakable sound of Rosa’s younger, desperate voice cutting through the audio channel.
“Hello? Is this the number for Alessandro Moretti? I was told to call if—is he there?”
The audio paused for a fraction of a second, filled with background office noise, before a cold, gravelly, utterly ruthless male voice responded from the speakers.
“Who is this calling, and how did you acquire this private number?”
Rosa winced visibly, squeezing her eyes shut as the ghost of her past echoed off the cold stone walls of the underground vault.
“My name is Rosa Mendes. I met Mr. Moretti a few weeks ago in Manhattan. I need to speak with him urgently about something important.”
The voice on the recording let out a cold, humorless chuckle.
“Listen to me very carefully, Miss Mendes. Alessandro Moretti does not take casual calls from random catering temps he picks up in the rain. If you foolishly think one night makes you important enough to disrupt his life or stake a claim on his future, you need to wipe his name from your memory right now. Try calling this number again, or attempt to contact him in person, and people far less polite than me will ensure you disappear permanently. Am I making myself crystal clear?”
A long, suffocating silence hung over the audio file before Rosa’s terrified voice whispered a trembling “Yes,” and the line abruptly disconnected with a sharp click.
The terminal speakers fell completely silent, leaving only the steady, rhythmic hum of the server cooling fans. Alessandro sat perfectly motionless in front of the monitor, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the metal desk so hard his fingers ached. The absolute totality of the betrayal hit him with crushing weight—not just from the outside world, but from within the very walls of his own family structure.
"He threatened my life," Rosa whispered, a single tear escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek as she clutched Lily tighter. "He told me I would disappear."
"He was acting under my father’s standing orders," Alessandro said, his voice shaking with suppressed rage as he slowly turned to face her. "My father engineered a wall of absolute isolation around me, ensuring that no civilian entanglement, no unexpected consequence, and no genuine human connection could ever compromise the syndicate. Salvatore Vance was simply executing the playbook."
"And now?" Rosa asked, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and vindication. "Now that you know the truth, what are you going to do about the man who sentenced us to four years of absolute terror?"
May you like
Alessandro stood up slowly from the terminal chair, his dark eyes burning with cold, absolute resolve. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his secure satellite phone, and dialed a direct three-digit extension without breaking eye contact with her.
"I am going to pay Salvatore Vance a very overdue personal visit," Alessandro stated quietly into the receiver as Marcus answered on the other end. "Marcus, prep the armored transport and two tactical units. We are driving up to Lake George tonight."
