Chapter 10 - The Trap Is Sprung, The House Under Siege, And The Final Stand

Before I could answer, before I could reach out and touch the broken man standing in the center of the art studio, the entire house convulsed violently.

BOOM.

A deafening explosion echoed from the ground floor, shaking the heavy oak floorboards beneath our feet and rattling the skylights overhead.

Instantly, a shrill, piercing alarm began to wail throughout the mansion—a high-pitched mechanical siren that flashed blinding red emergency lights across every hallway.

Adrian’s head snapped up, all grief vanishing in a fraction of a second, replaced by cold, lethal adrenaline.

"They've breached the eastern perimeter," Adrian roared, dropping his paintbrush and sprinting toward the studio door.

"The boys!" I screamed, panic clawing at my throat. "Evan, Caleb, Noah, Luke!"

"The panic room!" Adrian yelled over the blaring siren, tearing down the third-floor stairs three at a time with me right on his heels. "The panic room is beneath the library! Move!"

We hit the second-floor landing just as smoke began billowing up from the grand staircase.

Sirens flashed red against the mahogany walls.

From down the hall, terrified shouts echoed through the corridor.

Evan burst out of his bedroom door wearing pajama pants and a t-shirt, his face pale with absolute terror, dragging a crying Luke by the hand, while Caleb and Noah sprinted behind them.

"Dad! What's happening?!" Evan yelled over the deafening alarm, his voice cracking with panic.

"Stay close to me! Do not let go!" Adrian commanded, scooping six-year-old Luke up into his arms in one fluid motion while grabbing Caleb’s shoulder with the other hand.

"This way! Follow me!" I shouted, taking the lead and guiding them toward the grand staircase and down into the ground-floor library where the hidden entrance to the subterranean bunker was located.

Heavy boots echoed across the marble foyer below.

Men in tactical gear, wearing black balaclavas and carrying suppressed automatic rifles, were pouring through the shattered front doors of the mansion.

"Contact! Left flank!" a gruff voice shouted from the foyer.

A burst of gunfire chewed up the wooden doorframe inches from Noah’s head.

"Down! Get down!" Adrian shouted, shoving the boys behind a massive oak bookshelf as return fire erupted from the estate's private security team holding the corridor.

I dropped to my knees, pulling Evan and Noah down beside me behind a heavy leather armchair.

"Nia! Look out!" Evan screamed, pointing toward the library entrance.

A masked operative had slipped past the security detail in the chaos, stepping into the library doorway with an assault rifle leveled directly at Adrian’s back as he tried to unlock the panic room keypad.

My foster-home reflexes, my street smarts, and every ounce of adrenaline in my body surged forward simultaneously.

I didn't think. I didn't hesitate.

I grabbed a heavy, bronze-plated encyclopedia off the nearest shelf and hurled it across the room with every ounce of strength I possessed.

Thwack!

The heavy book caught the masked operative squarely in the side of his helmet, throwing his aim off by a crucial foot.

His rifle fired into the ceiling, raining plaster down on our heads.

Before he could recover, Adrian spun around, his own concealed pistol drawn with terrifying speed.

Bang.

A single shot echoed through the library.

The operative dropped his weapon and crumpled to the floor.

"The code! Enter the code!" I screamed, grabbing Adrian’s arm and shoving him toward the secret wall panel.

Adrian punched the six-digit biometric code into the biometric scanner.

Click-hiss.

The heavy steel panel of the subterranean panic room slid open in the wood-paneled wall.

"Get inside! All of you, move!" Adrian yelled, pushing the boys through the narrow opening one by one.

Evan hesitated at the threshold, looking back at his father and me with wild, terrified eyes. "Dad! You're coming too, right?"

"I'm right behind you, son. Go!" Adrian pushed Evan inside, and I tumbled in after the boys to make sure they were safe in the dark, secure concrete bunker.

I turned back to help Adrian pull the heavy steel door shut.

Outside in the library, heavy footsteps were approaching fast.

"Dad! Hurry!" Evan screamed from inside the bunker.

Adrian grabbed the steel edge of the door, pulling it toward us.

Suddenly, a massive, booted foot slammed into the gap between the door and the frame, blocking it from locking.

A gloved hand reached through the opening, fingers clawing toward Adrian’s throat.

"Hello, little brother," a cold, smooth voice hissed from the shadows of the library.

Marcus Vale.
