Chapter 14 - The Hospital Room, The New Beginning, And The Seventy-Two Hours That Never Ended

Two days later, the morning sun poured brightly through the pristine white windows of a private recovery room on the fourth floor of a Manhattan hospital.

The room smelled faintly of antiseptic and fresh tulips.

Sitting up in her hospital bed, wearing a cheerful floral hospital gown with a slight flush back in her cheeks, was my fourteen-year-old sister, Maya.

Her heart surgery had gone off without a single complication earlier that morning. The lead pediatric surgeon had beamed proudly, telling me the new valve was functioning perfectly and she’d be running track again by spring.

"So, let me get this straight," Maya said, taking a sip of apple juice through a bendy straw while staring at me in absolute disbelief. "You took a job babysitting four rich kids in Greenwich, you dodged water buckets, you scraped super glue off a hardwood floor, and your billionaire boss casually handed you an eighty-thousand-dollar check on day two?"

"Essentially, yes," I grinned, peeling an orange by the bedside table. "Though you're skipping the part where an armed cartel leader tried to blow up the library."

Maya rolled her eyes. "You always were a drama queen, Nia."

Before I could fire back a sarcastic retort, the door to the hospital room clicked open.

Footsteps echoed softly against the linoleum floor.

I looked up.

Adrian Vale walked into the room, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit—though without the heavy corporate armor he used to wear. He was carrying a massive, colorful balloon bouquet that read GET WELL SOON, alongside a large box of gourmet chocolates from a boutique bakery in Greenwich.

Maya’s eyes widened as she stared at the billionaire investor standing awkwardly at the foot of her hospital bed.

"Maya," Adrian said, offering a warm, slightly nervous smile. "It's very nice to finally meet you. I'm Adrian."

Maya blinked twice, looked at Adrian, looked back at me, and raised an eyebrow. "Are you the billionaire boss who tried to pay my sister off with eighty grand?"

Adrian let out a low chuckle, walking forward to set the balloons down gently by the bedside table. "The very same. And I'm happy to report she earned every single penny of it."

"She definitely did," Maya smiled, giving me a knowing look. "She never shuts up about how stubborn you are."

"Hey!" I protested, tossing an orange peel at her while Adrian laughed.

For the next hour, the hospital room was filled with something it hadn't seen in months: genuine, unscripted family laughter.

Adrian sat in the chair beside Maya's bed, talking to her about art, school, and her plans for the future as if they had known each other for years. He didn't look like a kingpin or a fixer. He just looked like a man who was finally learning how to let the light back into his life.
