Chapter 13 - A Knock At The Front Gates And The Ghost From Our Past

The applause from the inaugural scholarship gala had barely faded into the evening breeze when my chief legal counsel, Sarah, hurried across the manicured lawn toward the podium.
She held a heavy, cream-colored envelope sealed with a familiar, austere wax emblem that made my footsteps halt.
“Claire,” Sarah said, her voice dropping into a tense register as she handed me the letter.
“Security just intercepted this at the outer gatehouse.”
“It’s not from the press, and it’s not from your parents' legal team.”
I looked down at the handwriting scrawled across the front of the envelope.
It was written in the shaky, unmistakable handwriting of my late grandfather’s estranged younger brother, Great-Uncle Julian—a man who had supposedly vanished into self-imposed exile in Europe thirty years ago after a bitter corporate dispute with our family.
“Open it,” Sarah urged quietly, standing beside me as the last of the gala guests trickled toward the exit gates.
I broke the wax seal and unfolded thick parchment paper covered in heavy ink.
“My dearest Claire,” the letter began.
“If you are reading this, it means you have successfully weathered the storm and dismantled the house of cards built by your father and sister.”
“They believed they inherited the Hawthorne name, but they never understood the true origin of our wealth.”
“The real assets of Hawthorne Heritage were never the commercial towers downtown or the eighty-million-dollar estate you now occupy.”
“Thirty years ago, before your grandfather passed the primary shares to me in secret trust, we acquired fifty-one percent of Sterling Capital’s founding patents during their darkest hour of bankruptcy.”
“Richard Sterling knows nothing about this.”
“And now, a competing conglomerate backed by foreign venture capital is moving in to acquire those very patents through a proxy shell company.”
“And the legal representative heading their acquisition team is none other than your disgraced sister’s former fiancé—Daniel Sterling’s estranged cousin, Marcus Sterling.”
My breath caught in my throat.
Marcus Sterling.
The most ruthless corporate raider on the eastern seaboard, and a man known for destroying family dynasties without a second thought.
“Sarah,” I said, folding the letter tightly between my fingers.
