Chapter 14 - The Emergency Board Meeting That Shocked Wall Street

By nine o'clock the following morning, the executive boardroom on the fortieth floor of Hawthorne Tower was packed to absolute capacity.
In addition to our core financial directors and legal counsel, Richard Sterling sat near the center of the table, his face carved from stone as he stared at the digital dossier I had projected onto the main screen.
“Marcus Sterling,” Richard repeated, his voice tight with controlled fury.
“My nephew has spent the last five years cutting ties with our family firm to build a predatory equity fund funded by overseas cartels.”
“If what Julian’s letter claims is true, and Marcus has acquired the rights to our foundational patents through a shell company...”
“He doesn’t just control a loophole, Richard,” I interrupted, stepping forward to the head of the table with my tablet in hand.
“He controls the core intellectual property rights that legally underpin fifty percent of Sterling Capital’s global operations and Hawthorne Heritage’s entire real estate portfolio.”
“If he executes the acquisition clause by midnight tonight, both of our corporate empires will be legally dissolved and absorbed into his offshore syndicate.”
A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the boardroom.
Veteran directors who had laughed at my father’s downfall now looked at me with wide, desperate eyes, waiting for guidance.
“What do we do, Claire?” Sarah asked, breaking the silence.
“Marcus has filed the paperwork through a Delaware LLC with anonymous backing.”
“Our local courts can’t block the transfer without direct evidence of corporate espionage.”
I walked slowly to the edge of the glass window, looking down at the sprawling financial district below where my family had once tried to treat me like a servant.
“We don’t block the transfer through local courts,” I said, a cold, sharp smile touching the corners of my lips.
“We trap him at his own game.”
“Marcus thinks he’s buying a sleeping giant.”
“He doesn’t realize I’ve spent the last three months quietly acquiring controlling shares of the very shell company he’s using to execute the buyout.”
Richard Sterling’s head snapped up, a look of profound shock and reluctant admiration dawning across his weathered face.
“You... you bought the shell company?” Richard breathed.
“Before he even finalized the paperwork,” I replied, turning back to face the boardroom.

“Marcus thinks he’s holding all the cards.”
“Tonight at midnight, when he tries to execute the hostile takeover, he’s going to find out that he just handed his entire corporate portfolio directly to me.”
