Chapter 14 - Justice and Memorial

Three weeks later, under a crisp, clear autumn sky, a quiet memorial service was held in the private botanical gardens nestled behind the Bellandi estate outside the city.

There were no reporters, no corporate executives, and no security guards—only a small, intimate gathering of people whose lives had been forever altered by the shadow of Project Seventeen.

A polished black granite monument stood beneath the sprawling branches of an ancient oak tree.

Engraved cleanly into the stone were the words:

Dr. Daniel Bennett (1965–2018).

He stood against the dark so others could see the light.

Clara stood before the monument, placing a small bouquet of white lilies at its base.

Aunt Beatrice stood beside her, wiping a quiet tear from her weathered cheek with a lace handkerchief, while Samuel Bennett and Matteo stood a few respectful paces back, giving them space.

“Your father would have been fiercely proud of you, Clara,” Beatrice whispered, resting a gentle hand on her niece’s shoulder. “You didn't just clear his name; you exposed the entire rot and brought honor back to our family.”

“I only followed the trail he left behind, Aunt Beatrice,” Clara replied softly, tracing her fingers over the carved letters of her father’s name.

Later that afternoon, the group gathered on the stone terrace overlooking the serene valley below.

Julian Mercer walked over with a thick legal folder tucked under his arm, looking more relaxed than Clara had ever seen him.

“The federal judges formally approved the full posthumous exoneration of Daniel Bennett this morning,” Julian announced, handing a certified official document to Clara. “All slanderous corporate filings from Whitmore Capital have been permanently expunged from government databases.”

Clara opened the folder, reading the official seal of the Supreme Court confirming her father’s complete innocence.

“Thank you, Julian,” Clara said, looking up with profound gratitude. “For everything you risked to make this happen.”

“I was just doing my job as an officer of the court,” Julian smiled warmly. “Though helping dismantle a criminal enterprise was admittedly a nice change of pace from routine mergers and acquisitions.”

As Julian excused himself to join Samuel by the garden wall, Matteo walked over and stood beside Clara, his hands resting casually in his trouser pockets.

“The foundation’s first major endowment has officially been established in Daniel’s name,” Matteo told her gently. “It will fund independent ethics oversight in bio-medical research across the globe. No corporation will ever be allowed to hide human experiments behind corporate secrecy again.”

Clara turned to face him, the gentle autumn breeze catching her dark hair.

“You really changed everything, Matteo.”

“We changed it together, Clara,” he corrected softly, his gaze locking onto hers with unmistakable warmth. “And we’re only just getting started.”
