Chapter 8 - Confrontation in the Sub-Basement ICU

The sterile white corridors of the sub-basement medical wing stretched out before Clara like an endless maze of clinical indifference.

The air here was heavily filtered, smelling faintly of antiseptic and ozone, completely detached from the noise and chaos of the city above.

She walked swiftly along the polished epoxy flooring, her rubber-soled sneakers making virtually no sound as she scanned the digital nameplates mounted beside each heavy glass door.

Room 17-B.

Quarantine Isolation Unit.

As she turned the corner toward the reinforced glass enclosure at the end of the hall, she froze in her tracks.

Standing directly outside the entrance to Room 17-B were Julian Mercer and Marianne Cole, engaged in a tense, hushed argument beneath the flickering glow of an overhead fluorescent light.

“If Viktor finds out we let Matteo survive the night, our careers—and our lives—are effectively over, Julian!” Marianne hissed, wringing her hands in absolute panic.

Julian rubbed his temples with exhaustion, his tailored suit jacket discarded over a nearby metal chair, revealing a sweat-stained shirt underneath.

“Viktor doesn’t control everything, Marianne,” Julian snapped back quietly, his voice sharp with suppressed guilt. “Lorenzo Bellandi is dead, but that doesn't mean we have to turn Bellandi International into a graveyard for children he experimented on twenty-five years ago.”

“You’re talking treason against the entire board,” Marianne whispered harshly. “Whitmore Capital is ready to execute the acquisition the moment Matteo is declared permanently incapacitated.”

“Not if Matteo wakes up and invokes the founder’s veto,” Julian countered.

“He won't wake up,” a cold, velvety voice echoed from the shadows of the corridor behind them.

Julian and Marianne both spun around in absolute terror.

Stepping out from the stairwell alcove was Viktor Vance himself, his silver-streaked hair neat, his charcoal-grey overcoat immaculate despite the stormy night outside.

“Viktor…” Marianne choked out, stumbling backward against the wall.

Viktor didn't look at Marianne; his piercing blue eyes were fixed squarely on Julian with lethal calm.

“You always were too sentimental for corporate law, Julian,” Viktor said smoothly, sliding his hands casually into his coat pockets. “It is a fatal flaw when billions of dollars and decades of biochemical research are on the line.”

“Project Seventeen was a monstrous crime, Viktor, not a corporate asset,” Julian snarled, stepping protectively in front of the ICU door. “Lorenzo’s experiments destroyed families. We buried Daniel Bennett to cover it up, but we are not going to murder his son in cold blood just so Whitmore Capital can asset-strip the company.”

Viktor smiled, though his eyes remained as dead and cold as winter ice.

“You speak of Daniel Bennett as if his sacrifice meant something,” Viktor remarked softly. “He thought he could build a biological suppression valve to save the test subjects. But science requires martyrs, Julian. And Matteo Bellandi’s time has officially run out.”

Viktor reached inside his coat, his hand sliding toward a sleek, matte-black electronic injection device.

Before Viktor could draw the weapon, a sharp, clear voice rang out from down the corridor.

“Step away from that door, Viktor.”

All three executives whipped their heads around in shock.

Clara stepped out from the shadows of the hallway, her posture unyielding, holding the thick, leather-bound ledger open in her left hand like a shield.

Viktor’s eyes widened slightly in genuine disbelief as he looked at her.

“Clara Bennett,” Viktor murmured, a dark chuckle escaping his lips. “You truly are remarkably persistent. I expected my men to finish dealing with you in Harbor’s End hours ago.”

“Your men are incompetent,” Clara replied steadily, closing the distance until she stood just ten feet away from the corporate assassin. “Just like Lorenzo Bellandi was when he thought he could bury the truth about Milan.”

Julian stared at the ledger in Clara’s hands, the color draining entirely from his face.

“You have Daniel’s original trial log,” Julian whispered in awe.

“I have every single confession, financial transfer, and medical record your corporate board tried to erase,” Clara declared proudly, locking eyes with Viktor Vance. “And if you touch Matteo inside that room, I will broadcast this entire database to every international regulatory agency and news outlet on the planet before you can even draw your next breath.”
