Chapter 9 - The Awakening of Project Seventeen

Viktor Vance’s cold expression flickered with a sudden, dangerous flash of pure calculated rage.
He abandoned his attempt to reach for the hidden weapon inside his coat, instead taking two slow, deliberate steps toward Clara with an unsettling, predatory grace.
“You think a dusty book of handwritten notes can defeat a multi-billion-dollar global enterprise, Miss Bennett?” Viktor asked softly, his voice dripping with condescension. “You possess no legal standing, no institutional backing, and no understanding of how the world actually works.”
“She doesn't need institutional backing,” a weak, gravelly voice rasped from directly behind the reinforced glass door of Room 17-B.
Every head snapped instantly toward the ICU entrance.
Inside the quarantine room, Matteo Bellandi was sitting upright on the hospital bed.
The oxygen mask had been cast aside onto the sterile floor, and his pale, sweat-slicked face was contorted with intense physical effort.
His left hand was gripping the steel medical bracelet tightly against his wrist, his knuckles stark white.
“Matteo!” Marianne gasped, rushing toward the glass observation window.
Julian stared in stunned amazement as Matteo swung his legs over the side of the hospital mattress, his bare feet touching the cold epoxy floor.
Viktor spun around, slamming his palm against the emergency digital keypad beside the door to try and lock the quarantine seals from the outside.
Before Viktor’s fingers could punch in the security override code, Clara lunged forward with lightning speed.
She slammed her elbow directly into Viktor’s wrist, knocking the matte-black electronic injector out of his grip.
The device clattered across the polished floor, sliding harmlessly away down the corridor.
Viktor roared with fury, wheeling around and backhanding Clara across the face with brutal force.
The impact sent Clara stumbling backward, the leather ledger slipping from her fingers and scattering loose papers across the floor.
Before Viktor could lunge at Clara again, Julian Mercer tackled him around the waist with a savage roar, driving the older man hard against the concrete corridor wall.
“Marianne! Open that door!” Julian yelled, struggling to pin Viktor to the ground as the two men wrestled furiously.
Marianne Cole hesitated for a single second, torn between decades of corporate loyalty and the terrifying reality of Viktor’s tyranny.
Then, seeing Matteo standing upright behind the glass, she slammed her palm down onto the manual release lever.
The heavy pneumatic door of Room 17-B hissed open.
Clara scrambled up from the floor, ignoring the stinging pain on her cheek, and rushed past the threshold into the sterile quarantine room.
Matteo was leaning heavily against a stainless steel IV pole, his chest heaving as he stared down at the brushed-steel bracelet on his wrist.
“You came back,” Matteo whispered, his dark eyes locking onto Clara with intense recognition.
“I told you my name is Clara,” she answered, stepping close to him and sliding her shoulder beneath his arm to support his weight. “And I brought my father’s ledger.”
Matteo looked down at the open pages scattered across the hallway outside, his expression hardening with absolute resolve.
“My father and Viktor turned my childhood into a biological cage,” Matteo said, his voice trembling with a lifetime of suppressed trauma. “Every time my heart rate spikes, the C.B.-17 protocol initiates a localized neurotoxin release designed to keep me compliant under corporate control.”
Clara’s breath hitched in her throat.
“It’s not a medical alert bracelet at all,” she realized in absolute horror. “It’s a remote leash.”

“It was,” Matteo corrected grimly, gripping his wrist with his right hand. “Until Daniel Bennett built a manual bypass mechanism into the core design.”
Matteo reached up, took Clara’s trembling hand, and guided her fingers directly to a tiny, hidden release clasp on the underside of the steel band—a mechanism only the daughter of Daniel Bennett could unlock.
