Chapter 10 - Checkmate in the Server Room

The two private security guards flanking Arthur Pendelton instinctively reached for their sidearms, but before their fingers could even graze their holsters, Marcus Vance and his operatives stepped out from the shadows behind them, leveling tactical shotguns with terrifying speed.
"Drop your weapons," Marcus commanded, his voice echoing off the concrete floor with absolute finality.
The guards looked at Dante, looked at the barrels pointed at their chests, and slowly raised their empty hands into the air, taking two steps backward before surrendering their sidearms.
Arthur Pendelton collapsed weakly into his ergonomic office chair, trembling so violently that his coffee cup slid off the desk and shattered against the floor.
"Dante, please—you don't understand," Arthur stammered, holding up his hands in a pathetic gesture of defense. "Vance pressured me! Sterling & Cross threatened my family if I didn't help them acquire the Vanguard assets!"
"You embezzled three million dollars from Moretti Holdings, leaked our internal audit schedules, and orchestrated a physical assault on my executive secretary," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it felt like liquid nitrogen. "Your family has nothing to do with the fact that you are a traitor."
I stepped forward into the harsh fluorescent light of the server aisle, wincing slightly as I leaned against the edge of a server rack.
"Arthur," I said softly, my voice cutting through the hum of the cooling fans. "You forgot rule number one of corporate espionage: never leave your admin credentials active on a server you didn't build."
Arthur looked up at me with wide, bloodshot eyes, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Harper? You're... you're supposed to be in the hospital."
"And you were supposed to be retired in Zurich," I replied, walking past Dante right up to the main console. "Step aside."
Arthur scrambled out of the chair, terrified to even breathe in my direction.
I sat down in the swivel chair, my fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced muscle memory.
A black terminal window filled with scrolling green code appeared on the central screen.
I typed in our old corporate master override sequence, bypassed three secondary firewalls, and executed a complete system lockdown, freezing every single dollar in Sterling & Cross’s offshore accounts and routing them directly into a restricted federal asset recovery fund.
"Transfer complete," I announced clearly, hitting the final enter key. "All accounts frozen. Federal oversight notified automatically."
On the screen, a bright red banner appeared across all monitors: ASSET SEIZURE SECURED.
Dante looked down at me, a slow, appreciative smile finally breaking through his impenetrable exterior.
"Magnificent," Dante murmured softly.
Before Arthur or his guards could process what had happened, the heavy steel doors of the server room slammed open, and local federal marshals—tipped off by Marcus’s earlier courier transmission—flooded into the room, slapping handcuffs on Arthur Pendelton and hauling him away.
As the chaos settled and the federal agents secured the premises, Dante stood beside my chair, looking down at me with an intensity that made the surrounding servers disappear entirely.

"Now," Dante said, offering his hand to help me stand up from the terminal. "The ledgers are safe, Victor Vance’s empire is dismantled, and you are officially coming back to St. Jude’s Hospital—where I am going to make damn sure you stay in bed."
I took his strong, warm hand, letting him pull me up against his side, and smiled.
